School District 57 is in for some cash, an extra $41,650 for physical activity equipment.
The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education have announced funding for all schools to help get kids more active.
“Childhood obesity is a serious problem,” says Education Minister Shirley Bond. “One in four B.C. children between the ages of two and 17 is overweight or obese. The measures we are launching today will help make our students more physically active and improve their eating habits.”
To help improve the health of B.C. students, the Ministry of Education and ActNow BC (a provincewide effort to establish a culture of fitness and healthy living) have announced a couple of measures, including : $1.3 million in direct funding to public schools to purchase physical activity equipment. The money will be used to buy things like skip ropes, soccer balls, basketballs, or pay for physicial activity lessons, like swimming, First Nations dance, rock climbing lessons, anything that will get students busy and active.
Here's how the money will be dispersed.
Every elementary school will get $850.00
Junior or Middle School will get $850.00
Secondary schools will get $1,000.00
There are some other program incentives aimed at improving health which include removing all junk food from the schools and having a health assessment done on the school. Special grants would be available to schools that reach a certain "healthy" designation.
