Mathilda Wilson is among a  group who marched along Ospika, heading to the CN Centre and the official opening of a two day symposium on the Hghway of Tears

It has been a long journey for Mathilda Wilsoon, and that  doesn't count the walk she has just completed from Smithers to Prince George.  She has been on a special journey ever since her daughter Ramona, disappeared along Highway 16, her body found nearly a year later near the Smithers Airport.

Ramona was  one of ten young women who have  died or disappeared along Highway 16.

The symposium today will hear from  many involved in  trying to prevent such a tragedy from ever happening again.  From youth workers to police , the Solcitor General to Grand Chief Ed John,  all are taking part in the two day session to come up with an action plan for prevention, and  emergency readiness.

I feel sorry for all the families involved in this and the ones that lost daughters and sisters, but the best way to prevent tragedies like this from happening is simply to stop hitchhiking. I have 3 daughters, one only 15, and none of them would ever think of hitching a ride anywhere. They were taught not to ride with strangers. There is nowhere so important to get to that you have to do this. There are a lot of perverts out there, not just in the big cities, and people have to realize this. This may sound cold and callous but it is the truth.
