We will have to wait until next Wednesday to see if Prince George will advance to the next round of the Hockeyville contest. Last night’s program selected Port Alberni and Lac La Hache  from the Pacific Region to advance in the first set of ten cities to make it to the next round.

The second set of 10 will be announced next Wednesday night.

Is there still time to vote?  Yes!

Voting to push the “Prince George Pine Beetles” into the next round is open till 11:59 p.m. EDT Friday April 14th.  You can visit the Hockeyville (www.cbc.ca/hockeyville) site to make your pick.

Mayor Colin Kinsley recently declared all Friday’s in P.G. “Hockey Days” in an effort to show the City’s support of the contest.

At stake, $10 thousand dollars worth of equipment for minor hockey, $50 thousand dollars to repair or upgrade an existing rink, and the chance to host an NHL game.

You would think that Mr Kinsley would have better things to do with his time. I guess he has no idea what hockey really is either.
I know the Cougars sure don't
Why is that whenever there is a good news story, whenever someone tries to rally Prince George for something meaningful, there always has to be the negative naysayers? There are a few people here who have worked very hard to submit the PG entry, and they are still working hard to get out the vote. Just yesterday another national magazine came out with another negative PG news story - placing PG in the bottom of the more than 100 cities in their Best Places to Live in Canada list. Wining the Hockeyville title will put our city in an entirely positive light. Why the naysaying?
Get off your butts and DO something.
There are a number of reasons why people get somewhat negative about this City.
(1) Who says we are a hockey town. Im a little tired of 4000 hockey fans trying to convince me this is the case. How about a golf town, or a soccer town or whatever.

(2) The Mayor is pretty fast to get us to put on Hockey Sweaters on Fridays, however it takes him years to fix roads, and bridges.

(3) We get a tax increase every year even though we have a higher tax base and more income from taxes than any other City of this size.

(4) This whole issue of Hockeyville is a Kraft promotion, and a TV extravaganza and has nothing to do with reality. We have better things to do than play this game.

(5) If I dont support this issue that is my right. I support a lot of other issues that are a lot more important than Hockey Hype. Dont forget that this City pays $500,000.00 per year to keep the Multiplex going, and millions more to keep the other rinks going. Considering that 90% of the population are not Hockey buffs you should be happy.
I saw so many signs up in McBride I thought they had won! It would have been nice to see McBride win, but I guess it's a numbers game of some sort.
Mcbride, Smithers, Gold River, Powell River, and Trail will be the Pacific Regions entries next week so Mcbride is still in the running.

As far as Prince George goes, we have the Multiplex, Colisium, Kin 1, Kin 2, Hart Hiway, skating rinks. The Ice Oval, numerous outside skating rinks. We are in the process of putting in a $500,000.00 replay board at the Multiplex (Which is Stupid), plus who knows what else. You would think if we had any class we would bow out of this competition and let the smaller communities without all these facilities go for it. I suggest that those running this competition will see that we shouldnt be in it. $50,000.00 for an Arena upgrade?? $10,000.00 for equipment for Minor Hockey?? An NHL Game held in Prince George?? I think we could survive without it.
If you want to see a town with real Hockey Spirit, check out your neighbours to the East, McBride. This small twon of 750 has had most of their residents participate in all their Hockeyville events. I suggest PG and Northern Residents Adopt McBride and give this small town with big hearts, a chance to become Hockeyville!
