Clearing the Air About Athletes: One Man'sOpinion

Very often it is the readers of this column who come up with the most sensible comments.

Case in point:  The comment by one reader last week that before we head off to far off lands trying to snag some athletes to train in this city for the 2010 Olympics we should , “clean up our own back yard “ .

With an air quality that ranks as the 4th worst in Canada and in 1st place as the worst air quality in BC, how in the world do we attract athletes to train under the best of conditions?

At first I reasoned that maybe the comments didn’t fit the mold, until you spend a moment thinking about it.

If you’re going to train for cross country skiing, you’ll be doing it out of doors.  Such is not the case if  you are training for hockey, unless;
a) those athletes don’t take time every day to do an outdoor run to get in shape, and
b) we never pump fresh air into the CN Center.

If ever there was a case of getting the cart before the horse this thought brought it home.

Earlier this year we were off in Torino spending thousands on trying to sell the idea of training in Prince Goegre and I might add complete with an artificial ice oval (the plan and its $10 million dollar price tag have yet  to come before Council) while back home the residents coughed and wheezed as the city proclaimed yet another air quality advisory day.

The comment was intended to put our priorities into perspective.

It did that ...and more.

I’m Meisner and that is one man's opinion.

I think this is Prince George's biggest issue. Thanks for your opinion.
Internationally Canada has a reputation of crystal clear lakes and rivers, pristine nature and fresh unpolluted air.

If athletes from heavily industrialized countries come here and expect to find all that to be true of course they will be disappointed with Prince George.

The above sites are about the latest air quality readings from Environment Canada, the last one is about Prince George specifically.
