The new President of the Chamber of Commerce, Micheal Kerr  addressed Council on behalf of the 950 businesses in P.G.

Kerr delivered five points to Council, asking that the Councillors keep these things in mind before they look at rates to be paid by businesses:

1.  class 2-8 businesses form a smal percentage of companies on the tax roll, but carry 42% of the tax burden
2.  class 2-8 businesses will have no benefit from the homeowners grants
3.  Bill 14 should be allowed to satbd as -is, letting local goverenments to set the business tax rates as opposed to  setting the rates "provincially"
4. Averages do not give the whole picture on taxes, he says  Council should look at the extremes on either end of the scale as some businesses see their taxes    go up significantly
5. Recognizes that council has a difficult task of maintaining a balance  between a productive business climate that allows businesses to compete yet contnue to provide services

Councilor Munoz delivered a notice of motion that at the next Council meeting she will  present a motion  calling for changes in the business tax system and payment  schedules.

Councillor Munoz? That councillors record on giving taxpayers a break is down right poor.
This is the councillor that said taxes have to go up to pay the city's increase utilities costs. In other words the taxpayers have to pay their own energy cost increases plus the city's. Therefore the city does not have to reduce energy costs to live within their means, but the taxpayer certainly will be.
Part of the Talk Tax Rates questionairre involved personal residence property taxes. Unfortunately, the current tax bills won't be sent out until mid May. So, we can't comment on our tax increases for 2006 yet.

I feel the discussions should be held off until we see how much our taxes are going to increase. Percy
