The weather may not have been cooperating, but it won't be long before we are into the slap happy season, and reaching for "OFF".

It's that time, when the City makes plans to keep the mosquito population at bay.

While the City does use a biological larvicide, (Bti) the City is asking residents to do their part in eliminating standing pools of water.

That means removing old tires, cleaning rain gutters and bird baths, emptying or treating unused swimming pools, draining or dumping other artificial waste containers, unclogging ditches, punching holes in tires used as play ground equipment and otherwise eliminating potential mosquito breeding sites.

The City's plan isn't intended to eliminate the mosquito population, but as the City reports, "Keep them at a tolerable level by encouraging stable natural predator populations. "

Last year, the City applied 3060kg of larvicide to 396 hectares of standing water.

The peak mosquito season in Prince George is now through June.
