B.C. has a new "State-of-the-art crime research lab." Located in the Fraser Valley, the Abbotsford lab will conduct research and use technology to not only analyze trends, but use that research to come up with new ways to fight crime.
According to the new Centre for Criminal Justice Research website, the lab will "analyze crime data provided by the police to examine, among other things, the root causes of crime, crime hot spots, and prolific offenders, and will develop solutions to address high profile crime problems in communities throughout the province. "
It has already produced some research papers:
-Marihuana Grow operations in B.C.
-Clandestine Drug Labs in B.C.
-Multi tasking behaviours of General Duty Police Officers
-Analysis of Police Service Delivery and Costing.
With links to similar research labs in Australia, the U.S., Great Britain, and across Canada, there are real hopes the international connections will help in sharing information that will develop crime reduction strategies that will work in B.C.
More than $2 million has been invested in the development and operation of the new lab. Contributions have come from the province, the RCMP, Sun Microsystems of Canada, UCFV and i2Inc, which is a leading worldwide provider of investigative analysis software.
