Soccer Dollars Miss the Net: One Man's Opinion

Instead of dropping $20,000 dollars to have the Canadian National Women’s Soccer Team practice in the city for a week , how about we just set that money aside and send some of our best soccer players out for some special events?

Twenty G’s for the gals to take over the fields for a week works out to about $800.00 dollars for each athlete.

What makes the whole thing so special is the manner in which Events Prince George is treating the matter. We are giving the head coach and manager a special tour with the intent of trying to talk them into taking our money so they can practice here.

Money well spent?

Aren't there some budding young athletes who, for whatever  reason, can’t raise the necessary money to get some special help , why wouldn’t we be sending them off to that special school or are we hoping that by watching the national women’s team do their thing that we will provoke a new interest in soccer in the city?

We already know that soccer is a big sport in this city; we also know that we are training some very good athletes from this city. In order to hit the world stage we will need a better effort at promoting the sport in Canada at both the Men’s and Women’s level. Something that so far just hasn’t happened in this country.

So instead, Events PG is trying to lure them into the city with a free- bee compliments of the PG Youth Soccer Association. It has that same ring as an ice oval at $10 million for training for the 2010.  And quite frankly, makes about the same amount of sense.

I’m Meisner and that is one man’s opinion.

The Canadian National Women’s Soccer Team is world class and a treat to see in action. I think that it would have no problem raising $20,000 by playing a series of exhibition games against local teams and charging admission. I myself would certainly go and pay to see it in action!
Amen to that Diplomat...
Let's stop making OUR athletes go away to get better as Ben suggests and start making steps to keep them here. This is a big step in that direction..It gives the kids some real life role models and something to aspire to vs. shipping them south to get the same experience.
You're way off the mark here Ben..stick to what you know.
Anytime we can attract, invite or see world class anything to PG is money well spent. Not everyone has the ability to travel or participate in Speciality Camps. Allowing everyone in PG to see first hand the abilities, calibre and the talents necessary to be world class help everyone see what is required to make it to this level. I think it was money well spent, because it benefits so many, not just a few fortunate ones. Chester
