The former Mayor of Ft. St. John, who had served as the mayor of that community from 1990 to 2005, has been appointed to the Board of Governors for UNBC.

Steve Thorlakson will assume the position effective May 31st.

Thorlakson has lived in Ft. St. John for the past 27 years and had been one of the guiding lights to obtain a satellite campus in that city. 56 year old Thorlakson says he is pleased with the appointment and looks forward to the challenges of the position at UNBC.

This is the same fellow who recently was charged with income tax evasion for not paying taxes for 3 years. He is also a financial advisor by trade. I question the logic in this appointment as he sure thinks he knows how to handle money but doesn't
I know Steve though. He is a great guy in that he has served the public area for many years and truly does value holding true to doing things good for the public. His personal life is his own thing.
Technically he was convicted. You referred to it as being charged. He didn't file his tax returns after being asked to by Revenue Canada for the years 2000-2002.

He was the mayor from 1990-2005. 15 years in which he, from all accounts that I could find, where he did a good job. You even admit that he serves the public well.

His appointment should be based on the merit of his past employment history. Obviously, UNBC recognized that his personal error of judgement was just that, personal. I am sure we all do things in our personal life that our coworkers aren't aware of!
