Prince George - Peace River M.P Jay Hill  took part in the  announcement of funding for UNBC's research on glaciers and global warming, but  says the  timing of the $2.1 million dollar grant is not meant to reduce the heat the Harper Team's been taking over its lack of committment to Kyoto. "The decision for this was made in January and this was just the best opportunity for everyone to get together to make the announcement.  Obviously it is a long term committment for the study of the glaciers and it has absolutely nothing to do with Kyoto or the new Conservative government's position on climate change."

Hill did mention that funding for all agencies, including the Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Sciences, is under review.   The Executive Director of the CFCAS  says her Foundation's funding is nearly dry, but Hill says "We have remarked over the years a lot lof the great work the foundations are doing, but we are going to be taking a look  at how they operate, how they're  audited and try to make them as transparent as possible for people to see all the good things they are accomplishing on behalf of the taxpayers, who ultimately the foundations, and any government spending has to be held accountable to the taxpayers that provide the money."

Hill says that when it comes to the environment, his government is committed to a "made in Canada approach"  "We are not going to proceed down the path of the former Liberal government that very hypocritically signed on to the Kyoto agreement when they knew that they couldn't accomplish the targets.  The targets that we set as we  move forward and announce our  made in Canada approach to climate change and to pollution and combatting those things, is going to very clearly be a plan that is achievable and as effective as possible."

UNBC's Dr Brian Menounos will head a team of researchers on a study of  the glaciers in 7 regions of B.C. in a search for information about previous changes in climate.  Some of the debris now being found as glaciers retreat, has been dated as 1600 years old.

As soon as I read that I knew that it has EVERYTHING to do with the Conservative cop-out in respect to the Kyoto Agreement.

Just because one has not met the target of an agreement one does not throw out the whole thing. It simply means that one must try harder. I suspect that the Conservatives do not follow their own agenda on this but that they are just following orders.
