Click here to see just how fast flames rip through a forest.
This video was shot in late June of 2000. A camera, encased in a heat protected stand, was placed in a prescribed burn area. There are two things to note on this video;
- The time that elapses
- The heat that is created
Once you have viewed the video you will realize the phrase “gone in 60 seconds” has a whole new meaning.
This evening, Prince George Environment Services along with Fire/Rescue and the BC Ministry of Forests and Range Protection Branch will host an open house to introduce the City’s wildfire protection plan.
Prince George has a lot of forested areas, and with the devastation by the mountain pine beetle, the City has been trying to remove dead trees which pose a significant fire threat. The City is also working towards removing dead trees within a certain radius of the City and has already talked to the Regional District of Fraser Fort George, and is requesting the Ministry of Forests and Range make it a priority to remove the dead pine beetle stands from Crown lands within that radius.
In addition to presenting detailed information on which areas of the City are set to be treated in the 2006 Wildfire Protection Plan, there will also be information on how to “FireSmart” your home and property.
The information session is set for 7-9 this evening in the 2nd floor conference room of City Hall.
