Prince George Mayor Colin Kinsley looks at sign that will be showing up more and more throughout the region
The Northern Development Initiatives Trust has announced it is putting $4.2 million dollars into the building of the Northern Sport Centre.
Prince George Mayor and Regional District Chairman, Colin Kinsley noted the money is split. $3 million will be in the form of an interest free loan, and the remaining $1.2 million will be a straight out "grant".
The total cost of the Sport Centre is $30.75 million. The Provincial government has put in $21 million and the University of Northern B.C. and local governments were each to come up with $5 million dollars for the balance.
The announcement today means the local government share is nearly complete, and Kinsley has hopes the remaining $800 thousand can be found through the Federal government "We feel there is a role for the Federal government to play here and they believe there might be as well. We are hopeful the Federal Government will assist in this very, very, worthwhile project." Kinsley says based on the Government's current policies and programs, the Sport Centre satisfies several criteria for funding.
Kinsley says the Northern Trust cheques will be presented this evening at the gala honouring UNBC President Charles Jago.
