Prince George Mayor Colin Kinsley looks at sign that will be showing up more and more throughout the region

The Northern Development Initiatives Trust  has announced it is putting $4.2 million dollars into the building of the Northern Sport Centre.

Prince George Mayor and Regional District Chairman, Colin Kinsley  noted the money is split.  $3 million  will be in the form of an interest free loan,  and the  remaining $1.2 million will be a straight out "grant".

The total cost of the Sport Centre is $30.75 million.  The Provincial government has  put in $21 million and the University of Northern B.C. and local governments were each to come up with $5 million dollars for the  balance.

The announcement today means the local government share is nearly complete,  and Kinsley has hopes the remaining $800 thousand can be found through the Federal government "We  feel there is a role for the Federal government to play here and they believe there might be as well.  We are hopeful the Federal Government will assist in this very, very, worthwhile project."  Kinsley says based on the Government's current policies and programs, the Sport Centre satisfies several criteria for funding.

Kinsley says the Northern Trust cheques will be presented this evening at the gala honouring UNBC President Charles Jago.

And all this to benefit a very select few..... way to go
The Northern Trust is local government? Interesting to not that. I thought it was a Trust set up with money from the CN deal plus some additional funding from the province to invest into north-central interior diversification.

I could see the money going to assist a show manufacturer locating here to make soccer shoes for use on indoor fields. But, hey, those kinds of diversification projects are hard to come by.
No money to repair the Camerson St. Bridge and service 8000 vehicles per day, however we can come up with millions for some dubious sport centre, that I gaurantee you will be under utilized for years to come.

Have you noticed that a number of functions that used to be held at the Civic Centre are now being held at CN Centre. Is the City kiting business from the Civic Centre to CN Centre to try to reduce the yearly loss at CN Centre of Approx $380,000.00 per year. Not to many people are paying attention to the loss at the Civic Centre anymore, so if it goes up no one will complain. I could be wrong but it seems that we have a Major under utilization of the Civic Centre, even though when it was built we were led to beleive that we would attract Conventions, etc from all over the World.

So what else is new?
My problem witht he civic centre is the total lack of any parking ! You don't build a convention centre with no parking lots ! The only parking within sight of the civic centre belongs to the library, RCMP ( do they really need to park on the street and that huge lot ? ), Coast Inn and the swimming pool. Course the city just says to park at the Pool lot but often this is near capacity just for the people using the pool. Who on earth thought that one out !
"Who on earth thought that one out".
The bad news is that there is no one at City hall that can think. The good news is that if you dislike the pot holes in our streets the City now paints the circumference of the hole a bright orange so its more visable for you to miss.
Pal you need to do your homework before you post. If you had done so it would have been easy to see the Civic Centre was FULLY booked hence the reason the Jago thing was where it was. Also.... the CC is PACKED and getting more so...it had a banner year last year or did you not keep up on budget deliberations and the discussions there? Revenue to the City as a whole cannot simply be measured by the amount of rent the CC brings in, one must look at the effect on the larger community and the impact there. It would be VERY hard to argue the CC is not having a large postive effect in those parameters.
If you're going to slam something please get your facts straight!!!
