If Harold Kubart has his way, the City of Prince George will ban the use of cosmetic herbicides and pesticides on public and private lands.
Kubart made a presentation to Council, outlining a recent report on the use of such materials. Such chemicals have negative effects says Kubart, who admits there is no way to know which pesticides and herbicides are safer than others.
He is calling on the local government to make the kind of decisions that will be in the best interests of future generations.
He presented 181 pages of information to Council talking about the links between herbicides, pesticides and cancers. "The dandelion has never harmed anyone" says Kubart.
Mayor Kinsley says the Council has in the past had some discussion about herbicide and pesticide, and has called on Administration for an update on the application of herbicide and pesticide for City applications.
Bob Radloff of Development Services says the City has moved towards less aggressive methods of pesticides and herbicides, doing things like increased mowing. The City says it will look at what its peer cities are doing.
Kubart says there has to be education and the City should check with some other communities about how they were able to do it.
