The twinning of the Simon Fraser bridge project has taken another step forward, with three companies now asked to submit their proposals for design and construction.

American Bridge Canada Co., Peter Kiewit Sons Co. and SNC-Lavalin Constructors Ltd.  will be asked this week to submit proposals for the contract.

Twinning the Simon Fraser Bridge is part of the five-year first phase of the Cariboo Connector project to four-lane the 460-kilometre stretch of Highway 97 between Prince George and Cache Creek.

The total budget for this project is $32.5 million. The contract will be awarded this September with construction expected to start this fall.  The project is expected to take two years to complete.

I am surprised that this is in fact happening. I shall not hold my breath waiting for it to actually happen, but shall be very happy if it does.
There is no doubt that this twinning will go ahead, however if people with clear minds thought about it for a while they would realize that once the South Scale is moved to the Hixon area the bottleneck of traffic backed up a the lights at the scale will disapear and twinning would not be necessary. At best the twinning will allow the traffic to get to the Highway 97 and 16 intersection, and the intersection of Ferry Ave and 16 faster after which they will have to wait for the lights and traffic will once again be backed up, only in a different area. Kiss the 32.5 million goodbye.
This just means a more effective bypass from 97 north to 16 west will be that much further into the future. The same money could have built a new 4 lane bridge across the Fraser further south and then put some money into roads to access the bridge.
As the story says "Just the first phase of the Cariboo Con" Next year we can expect to see another 3 km twinned south of town. Wow!
I can't believe that anyone could feel even one bit negative about the twinning!

The last time there was a head-on accident on the two-lane bridge the traffic was stalled in both directions for a very long time.

Even one vehicle breaking down in the middle of the bridge can cause real problems for ambulances and fire trucks!

The idea is to separate the bridge traffic into two twin opposed direction lanes.

It will be much safer and save lives in the future.

Nothing wrong with that, in my humble opinion. Good to see an election promise actually kept, come to think about it.
Diplomat. If twinning is such an obvious way to avoid accidents, and move traffic. Then why would our illustrious politicians build a two lane bridge for this City, which had the same population when it was built as it has to-day.

Were they dumb then and smart now, or were they smart then and dumb now. You tell me.

Bridges dont cause accidents, people do.
The province has an annual budget for highway and bridge construction.

If we don't want this project we can let the government know. But, if you think that the money set aside for this twinning will be "saved" - well, no, it won't.

It will just be assigned to another project, perhaps in Kamloops (which already has more fourlane bridges and overpasses than Prince George, with less industry and population) or it will go to the Whistler connector.

Two lane bridges were built in the past because they satisfied the traffic demands at that time.

The Patullo Bridge is a good example how bridges that are too narrow and don't separate traffic properly have much higher head-on collision deaths statistics.

Politicians are whatever the necessity of the moment requires them to be: When something goes wrong they claim to have been totally uninvolved and uninformed. When something turns out well they rush up in droves, cutting ribbons, crowing and cackling while spouting off about how their knowledge and wisdom saved the day and how grateful we should all be and re-elect them.

Politicians are both smart and dumb. We are the ones who keep electing them.

Diplomat. Maybe if we quit making excuses for politicians and held their feet to the fire things would start to change. As it is now we basically expect them to screw up and they do. This is a self fulfilling prophecy and does not bode well for the Country over the long haul. Politicians have to be held to a higher standard and making excuses for their mistakes wont solve the problem.

I am not against the twinning of the Fraser River Bridge, all I am saying is that the traffic will move down the line to the lights at 16 and 97 and 16 and Ferry and will start to back up there, and of course thats where the accidents will start to increase.

40 Million to Twin the John Hart Bridge and probably another 40 Million to twin the Fraser River Bridge, and maybe another 22 Million for a New Nechako River Bridge for a Small Town of 75000 People this is huge spending.

I still maintain that the Cameron St. Bridge should be repaired for $750,000.00 and get it up and running, however you can rest assured that the powers to be do not want to do this. They want to spend money on Major Projects. If enough people would raise (H) they would back away from some of these stupid projects.

A number of years ago this City wanted to run an overpass on Second Avenue in the Spruceland Area across Highway 97 down past the old Central Fort George School and connect with 2nd avenue. The cost would have been in the Millions and the road would have been one way through 2 School Zones, and residential areas, the intent was to get traffic downtown faster. When the Citizens in the areas effected told the City to take a hike, the project was dropped and 15/20 years later its still is not feasible. My point is, we have to rein in the money spenders, because that is all they do. Spend Money. (No responsibility attached to it) They continually find new projects to spend money on. This is because the Tax Money Comes in every year and heaven forbid we should reduce taxes. The other reason is job security. If they got all the work done, we would lay half on them off, so you can rest assured that they will continue to find new projects.

When was the last time you heard a politician in this town suggest that we should reduce taxes and spending. ????
I agree with you 100% as far as the Cameron Street Bridge repair goes and on most of the other points you are making.

>"Politicians have to be held to a higher standard and making excuses for their mistakes wont solve the problem."<

I am not making excuses for the way they behave, I am only saying that we seem to be stuck with what we got.

When recall was brought in the hurdles to jump over were set far too high and as a result it is nearly useless. It was supposed to be an empowerment for the people to be able to do something between elections, to hold the feet of politicians to the fire.
Dead people counted in the recall as well as voters who had moved away from P.G. and had permanent residence elsewhere.

It was/is a sham, designed by those who hoped that it would never work, except as a ruse to fool people into believing that they had a democratic tool.

Do you know another way to drag some non-performers onto the public stage of accountability?

How come you can't get those who call the shots to pay attention to you in respect to the repair of the Cameron Street Bridge?

The Mayor seems to be oblivious to any suggestion from the public when it doesn't fit his long range agenda. I have submitted suggestions as to road and pothole repair, numerous times, but I have yet to receive any reply from the City department which is responsible for it.

For instance:

The Bypass needs a longer right turn lane when approaching 5th Avenue intersection going north and wishing to turn right.

I almost had a right hand rear view mirror ripped off by a truck squeezing by while it was driving on the grassy section and climbing a curbstone.

It has been a bottleneck for several years.

Nobody seems to give a hoot.
