This is World No Tobacco Day, and there is cause for celebration at Cedars Christian School.

Students from that shool produced the winning video for the regional (northern interior)"Behind the Smokescreen" youth tobacco prevention contest.

Their entry is entitled "The Real Effects of Smoking" and was produced by Rachelle Durand, Matthew Nichiporuk, Richard Kingston, Marcus Schwab, Cameron Fehr

Second prize went to Prince George Secondary School for  "Stomp the Habit" and  Third Prize was awarded to Prince George Secondary School, "Fairytale"

Funded by Health Canada, the "Behind the Smokescreen" tobacco prevention video contest has secondary school students produce a creative video focusing on issues such as second-hand smoke, smoking effects on youth and the health effects of tobacco.  Winners  get cash prizes and their school can get matching funds for video production equipment.

The three entries plus another three from  the Northwest region (winners in Hazelton, Prince Rupert and Terrace) will now go up against other winners from across the province as part of a national video contest.

The project is coordinated by Northern Health’s Kerri McCaig who is the team leader for Northern Health’s Tobacco Reduction Strategy."We are pleased to be part of a project that helps young people share their ideas about the dangers of tobacco." says McCaig.  Tobacco use is the single highest  cause of preventable illness and death across the Northern Health region.
