Province Announces Gun Amnesty
By 250 News
Starting tomorrow and running through to the end of June, the Province is joining forces with the Ministries of the Solicitor General, Attorney General, and the police departments across the province to accept firearms residents want to dispose of.
It means, anyone who wants to turn in firearms can do so without penalty regardless of documentation for the gun.
“This amnesty is another tool in the fight against gun violence,” said Solicitor General John Les. “Removing guns from circulation will enhance public safety and reduce the risk of these weapons falling into the hands of criminals.”
The window of opportunity is clearly defined and the Attorney General Wally Oppal says once July 1st rolls around, charges will be up and running again.
Police would like all unregistered guns to be turned in, even imitation and pellet weapons. Other items such as registered firearms, pepper spray and knives will also be accepted under the amnesty.
People who want to take advantage of the amnesty are being asked to phone their local police on the non-emergency line. Police will go to your residence to pick up the firearm.
It is important residents do not transport these weapons themselves. Transporting firearms has its own set of rules and regulations which are NOT part of this amnesty.
Most of the weapons that are turned in will be destroyed while some may be given to museums. Residents are urged to contact their local police for further information.
