Big Changes in the Forest Industry: Harris
By 250 News
BC’s Forest Safety Ombudsman, Roger Harris says the forest industry is undergoing major change.
"What you see in the forest industry today" Harris says "is not a reflection of the past." He is referring to the number of fatalities that occurred across the province in 2005.
"In the past there was never the concentration of effort towards ensuring that the forest industry becomes more safe, where as today the large lumber producers are seeking ways to have all of those involved in the industry practice safely" and he adds, "It is now beginning to show. "
Speaking to Opinion250 from his home in Terrace, Harris has been very busy with his new duties. His new office has been in operation for a little over a month now and he is finding it a little different than he had anticipated, "I thought at first this office would be a mediator, but people are afraid to bring up things for fear of getting their heads cut off. I think you will see as this office moves forward that as a result of that problem we will have to deal with problems in the forest industry in a much larger way."
