Seatbelt usage was the target during a recent Quesnel-based safety campaign, but Opinion250 was surprised to learn that during the three-week campaign R.C.M.P. issued almost three times as many violation tickets for Aggressive Driving as for seatbelt related violations.

In its crackdown ending June 3rd, the Quesnel North Cariboo Traffic Services Unit, in conjunction with the Integrated Road Safety Unit, issued a total of 60 seatbelt related violation tickets during their zero-tolerance seatbelt enforcement campaign. In contrast, 171 tickets were issued for Aggressive Driving.

The exact numbers of vehicles checked in the campaign has yet to be released, but ICBC statistics reveal that in 2005 Quesnel had a 99% compliance rate for seatbelt usage. In comparison, Prince George had an 86% compliance rate, slightly below the regional average of 87%.

The four main concerns for enforcement by the R.C.M.P. were Impaired Driving, non-use or misuse of seat belts, aggressive driving and seatbelt violations. As well as the seatbelt and Aggressive Driving violations, officers issued 26 Intersection Violation tickets and one Impaired Driving violation ticket.

As for the seatbelts I don't get it if I am in my car I get a ticket for not wearing it but if I am on a motorcycle no problem or even a bus.
It is called using the safety equiptment supplied..
Maybe ICBC etc should just say if you don't use the safety equiptment suited for the vehicle you are driving, and you get hurt, you are not covered and the expenses come out of your pocket.
No one forced to do anything then yuo just become a victim of your own stupidity.
I don't think we will ever see it but I think it worth thinking about.
Imagine that, a 3 week campaign. Two of the four RCMP concerns related to the use of lack of use of seatbelts.

Would it not be more appropriate to redirect some of the efforts, resources and finances into more serious problems? We have a horrendous amount of problems with drugs, alcohol, prostitution, theft, robberies and violence.

It seems to me that driving without my seatbelt done up is rather insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

Has anyone done a financial talley generated from the 3 week Safety (revenue generating)campaign? Chester
Aggresive is probably the guy following a bit close because he is annoyed at the driver in the left (faster) lane doing the same pathetically slow speed as the vehicle in the right lane.
But lets not ticket the jerk impeding traffic, instead the guy who knows how to drive and should be in the left lane gets the ticket....that is my guess
Agressive driving...yes follow a trucker for 10km at 40k under the speed limit with no place to pass and when you do get the oppurtunity, the trucker is doing over 110 km +, pull out to pass and you are driving aggressive. Same goes for the tourists driving RV's checking out the sites at 10k under the limit totally unaware of the traffic they are holding up, pull out and pass and you are driving aggessively. What gets me is there is a 1-800 number to report aggressive drivers. Well anyone driving under the limit will think all drivers passing them are aggressive, they will be on the cell phone calling the cops.

Beware the Fraser canyon drive now, there is a big safety thing happening there so be nice and stay in line and play follow the leader.
I trust many of those guilty of the infraction of driving without their seat belts are finding nothing insignificant about the $138.00 they are obliged to shell out.
An elderly gentleman of 72 received a ticket-the first one in his lifetime. He informed the cop he was a pensioner and 72 years of age. The kindly officer told him possibly then he was old enough to fasten his seatbelt next time he got into his vehicle.
Great law enforcement-and the crack producers and addicts roam the streets at will, and proceed down their road paved to hell, destroying themselves and their families.
Amazing how this wonderful campaign by the R C M P officers, which is simply set up to provide a sizeable amount of money into their coffers, seems to take a back seat in my way of thinking. Perhaps their energy is not being properly utilized??
Maybe keeping law abiding citizens safe from the criminal element produced by drug addicted people who resort to crime to support their habit would bring more respect to the Force??
Wouldn't it be nice to only have to dance to your own set of drummers????
Gosh, I do hope they got their quota???
Maybe then they can get down to the real policing required.
