Highway of Tears Report Today
By 250 News
Today marks the 4th anniversary of the disappearance of Nicole Hoar. The treeplanter was last seen hitch-hiking on Highway 16 west, heading for Smithers.
Coincidentally, today is also the day the final report from the Highway of Tears symposium, will be released.
Then, this afternoon, the author of the report will meet with members of the media to answer specific questions about the document.
The report contains some 33 recommendations following the symposium which was held in Prince George at the end of March. One of the recommendations is for improved communications and relationships with the RCMP. Several families who addressed the symposium complained that they didn’t think police had taken their missing persons report seriously.
There are signs there are already some improvements on that front, with the RCMP meeting with families of the missing or murdered. They met last week to bring families up to date on the status of their review of the cases.
Symposium organizer, Lheidli T’enneh Councilor Rena Zatorski, has reviewed the report and says all of the recommendations are achieveable.
