Solicitor General John Les was in Prince George today to officially launch the One Click program.

The program is aimed at  increasing seatbelt use among youth.

In three parts, the program  includes a graphic 40 minute video which illustrates what can happen when seatbelts are not used.  One clip  shows how one young man is not belted, his three friends are, but when their vehicle is involved in a crash,  they are secure, he becomes a projectile within the vehicle causing fatal injuries to  his friends.

There  is a special education component that will go with the  program and RCMP officers will be taking the program to 35 schools throughout the north over the upcoming year.

The third part of the program involves a rollover simulator.

Click on the image at right to see the simulator in action.

It is the cab of a pickup, attached to spindles, and rotates at a speed of 48 kmph.  Equipped with adult "dummies",  the simulator illustrates how  people can become projectiles within the vehicle, and how they can be easily ejected from the vehicle.

The simulator is only the second of its kind in B.C.

I was once hit by a car off a side road while I was driving down the highway at 100km/hr forced off the road and rolled end-over-end 5 times.

There was four of us in the truck, none wearing a seat belt. The hood was gone, the tailgate was in a tree, the box was folded in, the engine was ripped right off the truck, as were the wheels. More importantly the roof was crushed down to the top of the seat.

We all walked away from the accident and not wearing our seatbelts was what saved our lives as we were all crushed down to the floor and seat of the truck. Had we had our seat belts on we would have been crushed as a result of the roll-over and killed for complying with the law.

I don't wear a seat belt and never will as a result. I paid 3 seat belt fines last year, all of them just around the corner to my house. I don't like it and I don't like being told how to protect myself for my own safety when this advice would have killed me in the past.

I think my safety is my choice when it does not involve the safety of others.
I dont dispute your claim that not wearing a seatbelt saved your life...but for every one of you there are many more situations where the outcome is reversed. Seatbelt or no seatbelt, sometimes people are going to die/live regardless. You were fortunate and had a bit of luck that day thankfully.
As for the 'safety is my choice when it does not involve the safety of others' comment...some info suggests that in car accidents with multiple passengers, the person not wearing a seatbelt has inflicted serious injuries (even death) upon other passengers that were buckled up. If in an accident and you are not buckled up, your body can become a serious weapon. Something to think about for sure.
It is the law, period.

If you want to choose to go without a seat belt and injure yourself, than I as a taxpayer and insurance consumer should have the right not to pay for your medical, legal, or insurance costs for you ignoring the law.

It's all about choice right?

It's funny when teachers choose to ignore the law, folks get all over them and say they set a bad example, but when it comes to laws regarding public safety, people think they can pick and choose which laws they want to obey.
I am amazed at how adept these goverment people are getting at sneaking in and out of town.
A select few know about it and the rest of us hear about it when it is all over....
I guess they are getting tired of people telling them what they are thought of.
gofaster we need a spy on the inside, so we can actually get some notice when these folks come. I find my media contacts usually know, especially if there's a good news story to be had.

chadder, i would encourage you NOT to wear a seatbelt. for the benefit of all of us. maybe your typing hand will get hurt in a car crash and we could all be spared your silly stories.
Regardless of what you think or feel, I know for certain that many people have been killed in simple car accidents where they would have walked away had they been wearing their seatbelt. I'm guilty sometimes too, but the fact remains that many people could have walked away from minor accidents and didn't.
Gofaster - I don't get the reference to government people sneaking in and out of town? I suppose you could ask the local MLA's to phone you and let you know if some government type is coming to town.

But I don't understand why it's important to you. Do you collect autographs?
Those were some good comments. lol

Points well taken except from spankyhimself.

My new truck annoys me unless I wear my seatbelt.
"I know for certain that many people have been killed in simple car accidents where they would have walked away had they been wearing their seatbelt."

Hmmmmmm ... you must be God to know that .....

I wear a seat belt. But that does not mean that I cannot comment on such opinions.

I realize that many people make such statements, but the best anyone can do with such an opinion is to state "based on what I understand about the situation, the person would likely have survived had she worn a seatbelt".
A new truck Charermando. - I've heard of people that could buy a new truck.
Had and accident once, I was a passenger. We endoed twice and rolled five times, no seat belts and didn't even spill my beer. What the hell was I doing way back then? Being a kid I guess.

Anyway the truck ended up looking like a tent and I felt like I was in a cement mixer. All I ended up with luckily was a sore arm. Come to think of it it's still sore today.

I wear my seatbelt all the time now.
Well Yamadoo, you can't have a new truck because you voted in your buddies Bell had his bell rung and Shirley....I won't get into that. LOL (that means laughing out loud) Good morning to you anyway.
No YamaDoPolCat no autographs....or pictures either.... scalps.....
