Visiting restrictions put in place at McBride Hospital late last week have been lifted.

The restrictions were  put in place last Thursday when three long-term care residents, an acute care patient, and one staff member showed symptoms of Norovirus.

Symptoms can include sudden onset of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, as well as cramping, chills and fever. These symptoms generally last from one to three days.

Norovirus and other forms of viral gastroenteritis are common illnesses.“While this kind of disease is usually mild, its also very contagious" said Dr. Lorna Medd, the medical health officer for Northern Health.

She says careful handwashing  is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of the illness.

The lab tests confirmed the suspected cases, but  today, the hospital is symptom free so the visiting restrictions were lifted.
