Long Weekend No Holiday From Road Checks
By 250 News
No fatalities or serious injuries on Prince George area highways over the long weekend and that may be in large part to the increased police presence on the roads.
Over the weekend, there were 36 different road checks set up at different times along the highways that link Prince George with McBride and MacKenzie. There were periods when there were 9 police vehicles patrolling the highways.
With 2335 vehicles stopped in the road checks, and scores more stopped on the highway for speeding, the R.C.M.P’s North District Sgt. Pat McTiernan says it would be safe to say that with 754 charges laid, about one in every four vehicles had a problem.
McTiernan says the weekend events included a street racing case. Saturday, two motorcycles were spotted racing on Highway 16. The officer who spotted them didn’t need to pursue the bikes, he just called ahead to the road check where the two bikes had to stop. Both bikes were impounded and the riders will be subject to the new provincial legislation for street racing.
Here are some of the charges laid over the weekend:
# of seatbelt / occupant restraint violation | 108 |
# of speeding tickets | 245 |
# excessive speeding | 10 |
# of aggressive driving | 28 |
# driving suspensions (alcohol) | 7 |
# driving suspensions (drug) | 2-24 hour |
# vehicle impoundments (unlicenced drivers) | 13 |
# criminal interdiction | 7 drug seizures |
# vehicles pulled from road for defects | 3 |
# vehicles needing repairs and report back to RCMP | 12 |
