Several cases of gastrointestinal illness have shown up at Mackenzie Hospital, prompting Northern Health to put some visiting restrictions in place.

To date, five staff members and two acute care patients have come down with the illness.

In an effort to limit the spread of the disease, Northern Health is asking friends and family of patients to avoid visiting that hospital until further notice.

Staff members at the facility are working hard to isolate those with symptoms to avoid spreading the illness to others, said Medical Health Officer Dr. Charl Badenhorst. Its also particularly important that people in the community who may have symptoms of this illness make sure they stay home and avoid going to work for at least two days after they are well again, to reduce the spread of the illness.

Symptoms include sudden onset of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, as well as cramping, chills and fever. Symptoms generally last from one to three days.
