A fatal police shooting is under investigation.

According to the release from the RCMP, around 8 last night, a member from the Williams Lake detachment went out to a call of a suspicious male in the Mcleese Lake area.

A suspect was found camping in the Beaver Valley Road area. That much information can be confirmed, but the events that followed have yet to be substantiated.

The officer reports there was a violent struggle, and he was not able to bring the man (in his 40’s) under control. The officer says he feared for his life and fired one shot. The male died at the scene. The officer suffered a broken hand and head injuries, he was taken to Williams Lake hospital, treated and released.

Police have made a tentative identification of the victim, but will not release his name until that identification can be confirmed.

An autopsy has been scheduled.

The matter is now under investigation by the North District Major Crime unit under the direction of Supt. John Robbin, of the Delta Police Service. The investigation will be held in conjunction with the B.C. Coroners Service.
