With just a week  to go before industry players are to let the Federal Minister of Trade know if they will accept the  Softwood lumber deal, B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell has delivered his stance.

Campbell says B.C. will support the agreement, that it is the best  we will get.  He says there has been clarification  and  acceptance of some of the  key issues B.C. wanted addressed including the standstill clause which means  there will be no litigation for at lest a year after the  deal is terminated.

There  is a committment from the U.S. to look at the issue of logs from private land, there  will be a 6 month notice of terminaton of the agreement, and there is improved language on market pricing .

"Everyone did not get everything they wanted" said the Premier,  and while he says it is not a perfect agreement,  there have been significant improvements since the initial deal was presented in April.  "From a B.C. Government perspective, this agreement is worth supporting" says  Campbell.  He also says that once industry has had a chance to  look at the revised language he believes they will see it  has been improved.  He urged industry to accept the  deal and reminded industry the U.S. has no interest in reopening and re-negotiating.

"Each company will make its own decision " says the Premier, "But I am urging them to support this agreement."

Trade Minister David Emerson gave the lumber companies until the 21st of this month to let their intentions be known.  He had indicated he would only bring the matter to Parliament for approval if  he had support from the majority of the lumber producers.  Critics say that is because if the majority support the deal,  the Opposition parties in the house  would not be able to skuttle the legislation and topple the Harper government.

Here we go politicians supporting each other while the W.T.O. once again sides with the Canadians. What a bunch of weak pu$$ies they are. Good bye Canadian money hello American domination.
They get their money no matter which way it goes...so nothing to lose of course they are going to accept it.
Didn't Cambell say a couple of weeks ago that BC would fight the agreement....Oh silly me...thinking that Cambell ever does what he says
I am getting oh so tired of rolling over for these damned Yankees.
Don't buy American...
hit them where it hurts the most.
Eventually they might, but probably not, get the hint.
"International Trade Minister David Emerson has given the holdouts until Monday to sign on. If they don't, Emerson warned he'll cancel fall legislation to implement the deal and the Conservative government will wash its hands of the whole lumber dispute."

The above is a quote from another source. If accurate we should all work to de-elect Emerson. We do not hire governments to pout because we do not gracefully yield their own personal 'cause celebre '.

Although we have come to expect this type of arrogance from government, we needn't take it from MP or MLAs.

The Conservatives under Harper continue to reveal that they consider themselves of superior intellect, and of higher moral conduct. I predict that the truth 'will out'when Harper loosens the straps on the muzzles or when MPs chew free.
Emerson is an #*$^$#. I will stop just short of calling him a traitor to even his own party, but even that seem as if it were true.
I wonder what is in this for him. It must be big and beneficial to him.
I think he should be fired or at least investigated for possible improprieties.

>...Emerson warned he'll cancel fall legislation to implement the deal and the Conservative government will wash its hands of the whole lumber dispute."<

He is bluffing, and bullying. It would hasten the demise of this temporary government.

Government is elected to represent the country in international dealings, such as this one. It is a duty it cannot abandon if it wants to maintain some credibility.

Like Clint Eastwood said in Dirty Harry: "Go ahead, make my day!"
In some ways the old saying "better the @^$#^%*%* you know than the one you don't", might apply here.
