Softwood Deal Could Be Passed By Fall

International Trade Minister David Emerson wanted  "substantial support" from the lumber industry, and  Prime Minister Harper says  the deal is supported by a "clear majority" so legislation to finalize the softwood lumber deal will be introduced  when Parliament resumes in September and could be passed  as early as the 1st of October.

Canfor, which stands to get back 600 million of the 800 million dollars it paid in duties, supports the  deal.  President  Jim Sheperd says it will give the industry stability.  He also says Canfor will look to invest those dollars.   Investment would mean no tax grab.

Premier Campbell says the province supports the deal now that  a couple of  sticky points have been cleared.  Industry support from this part of the country was expected as the Premier was flanked by thekey players in B.C.'s l;umber indusgtry when he made the announcement last week.

Prime Minister Harper has  indicated that when the legislation is up for a vote, it will be a vote of confidence and if the agreement is defeated the nation will head back to the polls.

The Federal Liberals  now sound like they will back down from any previous plans to topple the Harper Government.  The New Democrats say they will not stray from their path  and will vote against the agreement.  The Bloc has yet to make its position clear.

Although  with  the major lumber producing provinces  supporting the deal, and the industry itself offering its backing,  the political parties may be hard pressed to find support  from the average voters for what some critics see as "using the industry to play politics."

Yah, except you have been wrong before Gofaster!
If I recall "substantial support" was said to be about 95%. Now we have a "clear majority" which I suspect is considerably less than a "substantial majority" .... a majority being 51% or so, I would think a "clear majority" can start at around 60%. If that is what it is, then that is less than 2/3rds of what Emerson wanted.

I guess I would like to see this thing end. However, it will set a precedent of sorts which may be difficult to live down. I would love to know from someone like our local reps how much this deal could cost us in the future. We know it costs us about $1 billion now, but future opportunities will be diminished and added to thta cost resulting from backing down.
Interesting how our local politicians will not talk about this deal much and seem more concerned with the politics of it. I thinkthe court cases should play out to find out what the law is before political deels are made. IMO this deal should kill NAFTA because the precident it sends kills NAFTA for Canada anyways.
And I will probably be wrong again yama.
Of course I was not too smart on my choice of words in my pervious entry either and for that I appoligize to all.
I beleive Canada as a whole has been send down the river without the paddle.
I will continue to do my thing by not buying American until they start treating Canada as they want to be treated. Fairly!
Gofaster, that is a good way to voice your feelings and opinions, at the retail level. Good on you.

If the Federal Liberals think this is an opportunity to topple the Government, they better thing again. They don't have a solution to the Softwood Lumber deal. They had their opportunity. They don't have a leader. And they don't agree on how to deal with the issues facing us today.

True authority only comes with unity. The Liberals are not ready and it is also too soon to count on enough support to be seriously considered as a solution or a replacement for the Conservatives. Chester
