Mr. Wu xiaosheng presents a banner to Prince George Mayor Colin Kinsley.  The Chinese Characters read “Friendship, Cooperation, Development”

Members of a delegation from China’s Guangdong Province say they are impressed with the preservation of Chinese heritage and history in the region, in particular, Barkerville.

The  group  of four men  included reps from  that province’s  Overseas Chinese Affairs Office, and  the Director of the  Guandong Society  of  the Overseas Chinese Studies, Mr, Wu xiaosheng.  He told a news conference at Prince George City Hall that touring Barkerville made him very proud, as many of the people who lived and worked in that gold rush town had come from Guandong Province.

While it is hoped this visit will further discussions for the exchange of cultural and economic opportunities, the Barkerville Trust is looking to broaden its available audience.

Barkerville has just  revised its  website to include links in the Chinese language so people in China can actually visit the site  “We are looking  at everything we possible can” says Murry Krause,  Chair of the Barkerville Heritage Trust.  “We are also looking for opportunities for representatives of Barkerville to go to China to lecture in Universities and other places where people gather.”

The next step will be to ensure Canada becomes a designated “preferred tourism destination” for the Chinese.  That will mean there won’t be any need for temporary visas, and travel between the two countries will be simplified.  Currently the bulk of travel from China is limited to the lower mainland or heads on to Toronto in order to visit with relatives.

Barkerville has been facing financial challenges of late as the Province has turned over operations to the Barkerville Trust.  Is there a possibility the Trust will look towards China for cash donations to preserve Barkerville?  That is possible, “The Barkerville Trust is very young” says Chair Murry Krause “We will be working with every opportunity and every option for looking at ocontributions to Barkerville to preserve it.  Our key concern is sustaining the integrity of Barkerville as a historical site, so that will be our challenge.”

What, don't they want an apology for the way the Chinese were treated in Bakerville by my forefathers?

That's certainly different. Every race except us white trash seems to be demanding money and apologies for their ancestors.

Oh well, China will ketch up with the rest soon enough.
That reminds me of an interesting thing. There are really no "mansions" left over from that period as there are in Virginia City. From what I can tell, that is because there likely were none. "Chinatown" as it is depicted today was certainly not much lesser part of town to live than the rest.

I find it interesting to compare Barkerville where gold was found around the 1860's with Virginia City in Nevada where gold was discovered around the same time.

For those who have not seen Virginia City, you can "walk" through it via this page. Just click the arrow near the top on the right and it will take you though some of the major buildings, including some of the "mansions".

Hey, pal. This is northern B.C. Under-developed and still under-populated. Americans know to make a dollar. Us canucks don't and never will have a clue. Compare the M.G.M. Grand Hotel in Las Vegas to our "roadside" Treasure Cove casino. There is the proof. Go figure.
are they holding hands or shaking hands?

quite the banner! these chinese sure bring a lot for us?

what a joke.
nevada, barkervill, ya owl good comparison.

dream on.
Hey Simple, are you sure you are Canadian?
As for The Treasure Trove, it has nothing to do with being Canadian. You will have to talk with the owner and find out why he built it where, why and how he did.
As for being clueless I am sure you are possibly talking about the face in your mirror.
