With news of new deaths among Canadians serving in Afghanistan, Opinion250's last poll question was, sadly, timely.

The question was:

Should the Canadian flag fly at half mast  for fallen soldiers?

Yes  76.1%

How about having the flag lowered whenever we send soldiers into harm's way? Maybe that will be a good reminder of the sacrifice we're asking them to make on our behalf.
I am not sure whether serving in Afghanistan makes any sense. Seems to me we are sitting ducks there for bombers and skirmishes for decades, not much different from the USA in Iraq. Does not seem to be much of a peace keeping mission.

I think in this case that lowering the flag is not all we should do. We should be pulling out and letting another force go in. We always talk about the USA not having an "exit strategy" in Iraq. I have not heard of our exit strategy for Afghanistan.
Lower the flag. It is a sign of repsect for the ultimate sacrifice for ones country. I however do not believe that Canada has any business in Afghanistan. Every time another Canadian dies there,I shed a tear. It is sad to see fellow Canadians dying for such a hapless cause. I do however respect the troops, they do not decide where they will be sent and what they are fighting for.

But please lower the flag unless we are ashamed of our troops.
OK Folks...The flags are lowered by the soldiers Regiment,by the Command,The soldier belongs to Land, Sea, or Air The flags are lowered at NDHQ,in Ottawa all these outfit LOWER THE FLAGS FROM THE DAY OF DEATH TO BURIAL. The Federal Liberals only a few years ago change it from Rememberance day to every time some soldier died ...IT WAS WRONG TO DO IT...SO the Conservatives did the right thing and changed it back to REMEMBERANCE DAY...REMEMBER,the Regimental flag, the Command flag, NDHQ Flag, are all at half mask from death to burial, EVERY SOLDIER IS OK WITH THIS... ONLY THE FEDERAL LIBERALS ARE MAKING A BIG THING ABOUT IT, AND THE PEOPLE THAT ARE NOT INFORMED.
OK DAWN. I think I will support the lowering of the flag out for respect for the families.
ya sorry donnie, u suk, lower the flag. these ladies and men died. give them the respect they deserve.
How could we NOT lower the flag?... These men and women who have put themselves in harms way on behalf of our Country, deserve the same respect a fallen RCMP officer would receive should they pass on in the line of duty. I say.....LOWER THE FLAG!!!
YOU PEOPLE have never been in the Army Probably never talked to a COMBAT SOLDIER. I am trying to tell you the Flags that the soldiers LIVE and DIE under, THE REGIMENTAL FLAG,THE COMMAND FLAG,are lowered. BEFORE YOU ALL GET UPSET!!! TALK TO A COMBAT SOLDIER!!!!Most if not all soldiers are more LOYAL to their REGIMENT then Canada.I talk from 2 Bullet holes, 25 years service with Airborne Infantry. DO SOME RESEARCH BEFORE TYPING.
donnie, the only time you did in the military was in your dreams, if you were in the military then i no longer have any respect for the military.
Earth to DONNIE!
YOU ARE A JOKE.
Why don't we just fly the flag at half mast (lowered) every day? I'm sure there is a well respected Canadian that is between death and burial every day of the year! Wouldn't that make us the laughing stock country of the world!!! Canadians are so non-military oriented that I'm not surprised that 76.1% voted to lower the flag. How many of them even fly a flag at their homes or places of work???
I fly the Canadian flag proud that our soldiers are fighting in a war to preserve the freedoms we take for granted. I go to the Rememberance Day ceremonies EVERY year to honor and respect them. I donate bills (not coins) for the Poppies I wear. How could they fight for a country that can't even fly it's flag properly? Get a grip people!
Well Dawn you again stuck out your neck and I'm going to chop it off.A while back you took a pot shot at me because I had mentioned that I'm a veteran.
So you spent 25 years in the army and I would like to know what war zone you were in to get two bullet hole. Seems Canada has not been involved in a war since Korea untill the present Afghanistan blip. During that time Canada was only involved in peace keeping missions.

And you were in the airborn seems to me they were disband becuase the only war they were involved in was the battle of Somalia where they tortured a small Somalian boy that they caught in their compound looking for food. Remember Brown and the Cpl that tried to kill himself after the incident.

You will see me on Armistice Day in the parade wearing my green KVA blazer, bret with the PPCLI badge and when I see you I'm going to Pee on you to make you smell like a soldier.
Now you told us all that Kimbo was probaly in the postal service and never saw any action

Cheers.
1974 Cyprus 2 killed 27 wounded, 2 star of courage, 6 metal of bravery, 7 members of the military merit, all awarded to members of the Canadian Airborne Regiment in 2 Days. So if you not consider that a war, I do not know what you do consider a war. Also it was a Mcpl that tried to kill himself.I will take your challange LEG...TRY to piss on a Real Soldier and you will get hurt. SO SEX AND TRAVEL LEG...PS... TO ALL other readers A LEG IS A INFANTRYMAN WHO IS A ..WIMPY NON JUMPER...
Kimbo...Why wait ...come down to the Greyhound depot any night, Monday tru Sat and try!!!I AWAIT YOU Leg.
It seems that you boys have gotten a little off the subject, which I beleive was lowering the flag for Soldiers killed in combat. This issue of course has been resolved years ago, and it seems that the new generation is not aware of any of the History, or Traditions of the Canadian Army. During the second world war the flag would have been at half mast for a couple of years, and for a substantial time during the Korean war.

We are all aware of the sacrifices that Soldiers both Canadian and other Countries make for their Countries, and in Canada we celebrate these sacrifices on Rememberance Day.

I would have to agree with Don in this instance that the Armed Forces lower the flags for fallen soldiers, and I would suggest that those who wish to do more, can do so at the Local Municipal level as I am sure a lot of people do.

Maybe we should spend more time and effort to keep our Soldiers out of War, rather than argue how they should be honoured after they have been killed.

I suggest that most Canadians couldnt tell you why the Canadians are in Afganistan in the first place, and would give you some kind of drivel about the Taliban, or Osama Ben Ladin, however the Government of the day and the Liberals before them state that part of the reason is to protect Canadian Interests. Would someone like to explain exactly what that means????
