Workers at Prince George's Rolling Mix Cement on Foothills Boulevard, head back to work on Monday after the company and members of the Teamsters local 213 settled their contract on Friday.

The terms of the new agreement were not released, although is believed the workers were pushing for a raise of $1.10 per hour.

The workers walked off the job Monday August 21st .  They had been without a contract since December 31st, 2005.

$1.10 good for them. Our famous Provincial Gov saw fit to give public sector workers (after some waited over 7 years for a raise) a whole .55 cents per hour while they give them selves a 12% increase.
Yep, I am for every worker getting more money-unionized or otherwise.
I do not worry about prices increasing for all when healthy increases are being paid to employees.
The only ones wwho are concerned are the welfare recipients-and many old age pensioners relying on their pensions to live on.
Rents can go sky high-groceries can increase drastically, all utilities can demand more money, gas can go up, along with insurance and taxes, do not let it ever end!
Well, it ends pretty damn fast for the people on fixed incomes who cannot cash a cheque that will cover it all. They scrounge to so much as feed a pet they love, and need for comfort and to have something that loves them in return.
Of course I am not concerned--after all, I do not deal directly with those members of the public.
I deal with the guys making the big bucks!
How about you acrider54?
Have you ever given it a thought as to the people who live on the other side of the fence-almost like on another planet.
I just would like to see everything kept within reason-so everyone can live with a certain amount of dignity, and less worry.
I sometimes do believe I stand alone.

I don't think welfare recipients and old age pensioners purchase very much cement/concrete these days. I see no problem there. Since welfare recipients/old age pensioners "can't withold their labour" I see their problem in trying to better their lot. Start a revolution? Against who pays you? Moot point.
Pensioners and welfare recipients join the Teamsters? Good idea 'cept fer the union dues. They'll kill ya.
Oh, for heaven's sake Simple-do you think because you feel they do not purchase much concrete you can justify your statement.
Start a revolution? What would it take to take the Simple away-or is that impossible?
It is really tough to put up with a lot of the ridiculous on this site.
Do you just come on for your enjoyment-as your contributions are sadly lacking.
How can people enjoy constantly "talking" stupid?
I am sure you can tell us that much.
I'm happy they got a raise. Is that all they were concerned about? Are they going to get paid for overtime? Are they going to continue working 18 hours a day? How much happier are they really going to be after making an extra 10 bucks a day? Chester
Oh NO!! Not another one!
Who said they were working 18 hours a day?
Who said they settled for $1.10 an hour.
Doesn't anyone care about finding out the facts before posting their drivel?
And what do you care how happy they are with the extra money?
Gimme a break!
So Trusted, so wise and knowledgeable. Why don't you share with us what you know? Chester
It's been said that it's thousands of times easier to criticize something than to create something. Critics aren't interested in helping people solve problems, they're only interested in pointing people's problems out. You owe critics nothing, so never pay them by responding. Another old proverb sayd, "Critics are like men with no legs trying to teach other men how to run." Don't let legless critics run your life. Chester
I know fer a fact that there is humour in everything. So there!
Yes-I also have heard of "sick" jokes-and I suppose they relate to humor. I don't enjoy them myself.
Just like I do not enjoy out and out stupidity.
As for the old proverbs as posted above-they are plain silly.-I suggest Proverbs in another book may be more appropriate.
It was never posted the wage at Rolling Mix-it has never been posted the increase- and of course they will get paid overtime-or they will be off to the Labor Relations Board.
How they spend their raise is none of anyone's business.
For the life of me-I wonder where some get their information from.
If you have nothing sensible or factual to offer-why bother??
"there is no incentive to work more unless they are getting paid more" .....

maybe true for some .... try telling that to people who volunteer as cooks, carpenters, snow shovellers, bookkeepers, graphic artists, fundraisers, etc. etc.

And, as more and more pressure is put on helping the elderly, the challenged kids and adults, etc. because tax dollars have been cut back the more these volunteer services are required.

So, if these people do not get paid, what is their incentive KB? You seem to live in a very protected and simplified world.
concrete = building
building = rent
concrete price increase = building cost increase
building cost increase = rent increase

when something is pushed here, then everything else gets to move a bit to accommodate the new push .... simple law of physics, economics, biology, environment, society, etc. etc ....
kb-you are so far out of the field-you do not get up to bat.
Communism-you say-?
Socialism?
How can you possibly associate my postings with communism or socialism?
I do not care what raise they received-nor is it any of my business how they spend their money.
So O K if they do not have access to the Labor Relations Board- I suppose they put in a grievance to the union if not paid overtime-.
owl is certainly correct when he states with every raise there will be a price to be paid by all-including the elderly and welfare recipients, who cannot go on strike and carry placards in a futile attempt to receive more money.
All raises by all unions affect prices by increasing costs for users.
Incidently, I have found, a good worker is a good worker-and compensation has nothing to do with it. It is either in the make up of a person, or it is not. As owl stated-not all workers, (volunteers), receive monies for their work, and yet some work tirelessly.
Put your communism theories where the sun does not shine.
For heaven's sake-read what is posted-and keep a clear head while doing so.
Ignorance is bliss-and there are a number of happy posters.
There are none so blind as those who "refuse" to see.
Trusted, I agree 100%, share the wealth, not only from the big corps but Government as well, that's what makes things go around.

Old age pensioners should benefit by the so called great enconomy of the day as well as some welfare recipients i.e. single Mom's. I hear so many positive news stories from the provincial Liberal gorvernment as to how well the enonomy is doing. So why then are the poor getting poorer and the rich getting richer in this province? I'm not going to even go to the middle person who do not benefit from the economy but just work to pay taxes.

If the economy is doing so well why are provincial taxes not going down? That would help everyone out.
The rich are not getting richer-and the poor are not getting poorer.
Corporations make more money-but their operating costs have gone up accordingly.
You might have said years back an apartment owner was "so called" rich.
When his apartments sat vacant for years-or he rented to low income people who destroyed them to some degree, and he did not get paid and had to pay a cost in an attempt to evict, and his taxes and utilities stayed on the rise, and insurance hit an astronomical high-and he had no money incoming to do repairs and maintenance, so became a "slum" landlord--well, pray tell, whatever became of that "rich" apartment owner.
And the poor neglected to pay the rent, as they knew it took time to try and get them out, so I can safely say the poor took care of their money, and the so called rich guy could end up with nothing but bankruptcy.
Bankruptcies hurt everyone, as the bills incurred just do not get paid-so who loses--non other than the so called rich corporations, as the other lot does not issue credit cards.
I, for one, am a true capitalist. I worked hard-I made money, was fortunate with some investments-took a bath on others, but I never declared bankruptcy and hurt others, I never collected welfare, or unemployment. I pay for my medical, and some of my friends get everything for nothing. I pay all my prescriptions, and they get to keep the hundreds of dollars their cost would have been were they in my position. I pay for eyeglasses, dentistry, etc. Am I getting any richer--I hardly think so.
So where is everyone drawing this fine line-about the rich getting richer and the poor-poorer?
I simply state when numerous pay increases are given to thousands of people, the end payer is the USER. If grocery clerks get more money, groceries increase-for everyone. The stores do not say-"Oh, for goodness sake, a wlfare cheque, or a pension cheque-we will deduct X numbers of dollars off your groceries, or whatever the purchase may be. The business owners must cover their costs-or they can no longer remain in business-so if they simply close their doors they hurt themselves and the employees. If they declare bankruptcy, they hurt all their creditors, and their employees. The creditors must increase their costs to cover the costs effected by the bankruptcies.
If companies make money, and re invest that same money-it helps create employment and bolsters the economy.
The people cannot have it both ways.
How many so called "rich" people do you know, and how many "poor?"
Go figure-they will tally out about the same-but lots of middle class!!!!
It is all a numbers game.
Boy oh boy, Tampax is having a booming sales day here !
I just thought it was good that they settled, and everyone is back to work. The workers are happy with what they are getting, the company is happy with what they are paying, and having the company back running full strength is good for all involved.

I talked to a concrete driver down south and they get a flat fee of $71.00 per load. He says it works out really good as long as they are busy. Some days he only does 1 or 2 loads, but has done 6 in a day sometimes. I don't know how this compares to R.Mix ?

KB is right, people are inherently lazy as a GENERAL rule, that's why they need to be pushed into working. We cannot jack up welfare rates or more people would opt for this, and unemployment rates are at an all-time low. We need these people working.

We should, however, take better care of pensioners. These people worked much harder in their day than we have ever had to, and built many of the conveniences that we enjoy today.
We take better care of retired race horses than retired people.

Lastly, I'd like to take a poke at the woe-is-me's that complain about their lot in life. Here's a tip...life is what you make it. The only person standing in the way of your success is you.
Trusted, you say Proverbs is plain silly? You think wisdom is silly? Wow, not much more to say, is there? You have it all figured out. Chester
Read the posting Chester!
Just one more time! And try to understand!
YOUR so called proverbs are silly!
The book of Proverbs I give reference to is in the Bible.
I just assumed you would know that.
My apologies for that error.
Wisdom comes to those who are capable of learning.
I would never lay claim to such a ridiculous statement that I have it all figured out yet.
I have requested additional information a number of times on this site.
Some of the posters are very far above me in intelligence, but I am willing and appreciative that they share their knowledge.
I admit I have little patience with the foolish
statements made by some.
The one by the reasonable man that "the only person standing in the way of success is you."
This is so false.
We are not all born equal.
We do not all have the same I. Q.
We do not all have the same ability to work-and accomplish.
We do not all have the same dedication to a project .
No, we are not all born equal-and some will never have any measure of success, whereas others will dedicate and devote themselves to
achieve success.
I have seen many people who are happy with their lots in life, and do not bother to dream "big."
I wonder if they are not to be envied?
Common sense should prevail.
I have seen many people "who are happy with their lots in life", and do not bother to dream "big."

Don't we call this success ????

The rest of it is a bunch of excuses. I'm not smart enough, I'm not strong enough, blah...blah...blah.

Wank, wank, wank...
