The City of Fort St. John has taken the next step towards the construction of an indoor speed skating oval.
It has passed the by-law which will allow that City to borrow up to $15 million dollars for the construction of the facility.
The City of Fort St John got clearance to develop a borrowing bylaw through a referendum held earlier this summer.
The results of that vote were 933 in favour of borrowing the money for the project, 734 voted against. With just 1,667 of the 13,045 eligible voters turning out, the matter was decided by just 12.78 % of the voters.
The Province has already contributed $12.5 million dollars to the construction of what will be known as the “Enerplex”. The City of Fort St. John’s contribution to the project could be reduced if Federal or private contributions can be found.
The architects are now developing some detailed drawings for the project. It is possible the tender for construction will go out this fall, with construction likely to start in the spring of 2007 and completion some 14 – 16 months after that.

If Prince George had held a similar referendum, and passed a similar borrowing bylaw, this forum would have been lit up by the usual suspects complaining about the cost of the project...!
