It may be the first day back in classes for students but teachers have yet to ratify their contract agreement.

The deal was reached on June 30th coming in under the wire in order to  qualify for a signing bonus offered by the Government.  The agreement  would give teachers a 16% hike over the life of the agreement. The BC Teachers Federation President, Jinny Sims acknowledges the deal isn't perfect "We did not get everything we wanted, but we made huge strides in assureing teachers are paid fairly and treated with respect."

She says the agreement represents "a significant step forward for teachers"  and is recommending the teachers ratify the  deal.

The final votes will be in by September 8th, and the results will be released on the 9th.

In an open letter to members, BCTF President Jinny Sims calls upon teachers to press the government to make sure the terms of the agreement are  "fully implemented".  "We need to impress on the government and school boards that this legislation must be fully funded" Sims writes "That teachers will not undermine these new provisions and that BCTF members will continue to stand up for the learning conditions that our students deserve."

Notice the teachers are always looking for respect. Used to be they earned it, now they go on strike to teach us a lesson in respect. Is it any wonder the public has no respect for teachers and whatever they represent?

"This is a Hold-up, stick 'em up". Ya that should earn some fear and respect. Hee hee!
Getting rid of Simms might be a good start....
Getting rid of Semms eh....what's the matter guys...embarrased...that she's among the very few that will stand up for other people and the government, to ensure a decent life style. Cmpbell would love to see them making $10.00 an hour...so he could then give more to his friends and pay the ridiculous rates of some of the contractors building his 2010 disastor, that we will all be paying for, for many many years to come. Wondering how people are going to do that with the hourly rates he would like us all to earn...
Give the teachers a break you people. Let them be the professionals they are, and pay them the same way we pay the rest of you so called professionals.
I may be retired now but I still made 3 times the money the teachers did, and I only have grade 11...Go figure and argue that one...
"Is it any wonder the public has no respect for teachers".

I don't believe this is correct. I believe that the general public do, indeed, have a great deal of respect for Teachers.

Obviously you do not, YamaDooPolCat, but you are not the general public.
I think teachers deserve respect. They are the ones who teach the children for us all, so we can go out and do our own thing. How many of you out there have the time and drive, not to mention education to teach your own children? I relish the ability to share the burden of educating my children with someone else who has been taught how to accomplish such a lofty goal.
Not at all.... It is just that she strikes me as a whole lot more radical than need be. I am not sure that "INSTIGATOR" is the right word but it is what comes to mind.
Then again maybe she is the right person for the job....
