Air Quality Advisory Remains

An air quality advisory for Prince George remains in effect for a second day due to high levels of fine particulate matter.

According to the Ministry of the Environment, the high levels appear to be due to a combination of dust and combustion sources. An upper high pressure ridge over the area is giving dry conditions and light winds over the area, which has resulted in pollutants being trapped in the Prince George airshed.

Twenty-four hour levels were 28 at Downtown, 17 at College Heights and 83 at the BRC site at 8:30 this morning. Although particulate levels are now below the Air Quality objective, levels are expected to be high again within the next few hours. Residents may also notice there is a strong sulphur odour in the airshed, says the Ministry.

The Air Quality Advisory is expected to be in effect until late this morning or until changes occur.

Air quality advisory: It's gonna stink today in the bowl. Just like it has for over 50 years.
Air was not too bad until pulp mills 40 years ago.
