The Cops for Cancer "Tour deNorth" fundraising campaign ride is officially underway.  24 bicycle riders representing 13 detachments and North District, arrived at the ReMax  offices on 15th Avenue in Prince George this morning for a pancake breakfadst, and  heft financial support send off.

Presentations were made that totalled $25,000 dollars, and there were head shaving  events scheduled  which  would raise more.

The show stealer was this gal, Jessica Madrid.    With her 36 inch long locks, the 4’11 in tall registered nurse was ready to take the plunge and have  her  head shaved in the name of charity. She raised $2356 dollars from  friends and co-workers.

Why?

The Public health Nurse says its simple "I work with kids, and this is an important thing to do."  All money raised through thr Cops for Cancer Tour, will support the Canadian Cancer Society’s programs for children including emergency financial aid to help with  related treatment expenses,  emotional support for  those with cancer and their families,  as well as  funding for medically supervised summer camps for  kids with cancer.

Jessica didn’t just raise funds for  the tour, she also donated her lopped braids to a wig manufacturer who will use the hair to make wigs.

As her partner, Chad Hellenius prepared to cut the first braid, Jessica noted "I have some butterflies,  but I’m ready to go."

With that, the first braid was cut,  and then the second.

This was not the first time Jessica has  made the hair sacrifice in the name of charity.  She did a similar shave in 1999.

Next in line, were Prince George Detachment Superintendant Dahl Chambers, and North District Superintendant Barry Clark.  Clark by the way, offered to have his  moustache shaved as well, for which Mayor Colin Kinsley slipped him $50 dollars for that cause.
