Sombre Reminder

Today marks the 5th Anniversary of the 9-11 terrorist attack.
You will be hearing and seeing a great deal of news coverage today about what has happened since two hi-jacked planes slammed into the World Trade Centre towers in New York, another into the Pentagon and a fourth crashed in Pennsylvania.
U.S. Secretary of State, Condoleeza Rice will attend a service in Washington this morning then she will head to Halifax, where, on behalf of our American neighbours, she will express gratitude for the hospitality shown by the people of Nova Scotia on that day. Thousands of Americans were given shelter in the Halifax region that day when U.S. air-space was off limits forcing planes to land, or remain grounded in the maritime city.
In Ottawa, Prime Minister Stephen Harper is to make a televised statement at 2:50 pst from the Hall of Honour in the Parliament Buildings. He will pay tribute to the 24 Canadians who died in the World Trade Centre attack.
Here at home, Mayor Colin Kinsley has prepared a statement he will deliver this evening at the start of the Prince George Council meeting.
The events of five years ago today were of such magnitude, most of us will forever recall where we were, and how we learned about the attacks.
Today, we would like to hear from you.

That morning at work all you could hear was the radio broadcasting the aftermath, the plane hitting the Pentagon and Flight 93 being crashed into the ground in Pennsylvaina. I had a co-worker whos sister was supposed to be on a flight leaving Boston, my Aunt and Uncle lived very close to the crash site in Pennsylvaina and then came the news that fighter jets were escorting a plane into Whitehorse. I started to pray as never before thinking this is it, they are attacking Canada and praying for all my friends in the Yukon.
By the end of the day I was drained but still hopeful, because out of the terror and confusion of September 11, 2001 came the stories of humanity. The brave heroes who went into the towers to rescue, the people on the ground helping each other, the people of the Maritimes opening their doors to stranded travelers and the overwhelming strength of New Yorkers who were already saying this was not going to be the end of a great city as they walked for miles trying to leave the city and get home to their loved ones. September 11, 2001 will forever live in my memory as the day North America changed and our safety was questioned.
