RCMP have not yet released the name of the young woman killed in a fatal car crash near Clinton.
The crash was ended a trail of trouble that started Saturday.
Police say several detachments received complaints of a 2007 Pontiac G6 auto, black in colour with an Alberta plate. The many complaints described two females in the vehicle. The vehicle was linked to two fill-up and flee tgas thefts. One took place in Prince |George the other near 100 Mile HOuse.
There were also complaints about the vehicle being driven "dangerously" passing vehicles on both sides and into oncoming traffic. The vehicle being driven by two females had been reported stolen from Grande Prairie on the 9th of September. The string of events mirrored the movie Thelma and Louise.
A member of the 100 Mile House detachment attempted to stop the vehicle just north of 100 Mile House, however it fled at a high rate of speed, there was no pursuit. Clinton RCMP tried to stop the vehicle at 83 mile while it was southbound on Highway 97. The vehicle fled again, the police truck had barely got onto the road with lights and siren when the suspect vehicle was out of sight. No pursuit was initiated. A second Clinton police car observed the car just south of 70 Mile House. He turned around and the vehicle was once again out of sight and gone. No pursuit was initiated again.
The helicopter from Kamloops was called and the pilot was preparing to head out to assist. Three police cars from Ashcroft were preparing to set up a situation to hopefully use a spike belt to stop the car well south of Clinton.
Police made the decision that with the traffic flow, the manner in which the vehicle was being driven and the weather (raining and wet) along with the performance of the vehicle in question, no pursuit would be initiated until it could be controlled with a spike belt ready close by. The situation which was being prepared well ahead.
However, as the vehicle was approaching the south Chasm turn off approximately 15 kilometres north of Clinton, the driver lost control at a very high rate of speed in a corner. It went partially in the dirt ditch, lost control, spun across the highway sideways until it was struck broadside by a pickup truck from the United States. One of the two female occupants was thrown from the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after. The other female was observed by witnesses running from the vehicle. She was later arrested at the scene by Clinton RCMP. This female was transported to Ashcroft Hospital and later to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops. She has since been released and remains in police custody pending charges. Neither female occupant were wearing seat belts.
Police are still trying to identify the deceased female who had no identification with her. No identities are being released at this time.
The two occupants of the other vehicle from the United States were transported to 100 Mile Hospital from the scene, they were also released with very minor injuries.
RCMP agencies from Grande Prairie Alberta, through Prince George, Quesnel, Williams Lake, 100 Mile House and Clinton are investigating all the incidents. The fatal motor vehicle accident is being investigated by the Ashcroft Highway Patrol with the assistance of the Traffic Analyst from Kamloops.
The BC Coroner Service is also investigating the matter.
