Protecting Pets and Humans

Photo shows how to let your dog ride safely, in a crate that is secured to the truck.
Animals in the back of a pick up, it is a common sight in Prince George. The push is on to get dog owners to take extra care when travelling with their pets.
ICBC and the RCMP are spreading the word that animals should be strapped into a restraining device, like a chain or a brace, or, in the case of those who ride in the box of a pickup, in a crate.
The RCMP will start with an education and awareness program, then warnings, and by the time springtime rolls around, drivers will face fines if their animals are not properly secured.
ICBC warns that in the event of a collision, an animal inside the vehicle could become a projectile, causing it to suffer serious injuries or causing serious injuries to the humans in the vehicle. There is also a danger of animals in a truck box being thrown from the box and becoming a danger to oncoming traffic or pedestrians.
The BC SPCA says it isn’t enough to just tie your dog to a rope that is secured in the back of a pick up. Ropes and leashes can become a noose in the event of an accident. They suggest a special harness and lead, but, short of leaving the animal at home, the best scenario is to have the animal in a crate that is secured in the back of the truck.

I cringe every time I see a poor animal in the back of a pick up, and some seem rather foolhardy as they rush back and forth. A quick stop could be the end of a great animal, or it could lie on the road, seriously injured.
If pet owners are not responsible on their own-they should be taught-and maybe if it cost them a few dollars they would pay closer attention to the comfort and needs of the animal they call a pet.
Of course we already know the majority neglect to get their pets spayed or neutered.
After all, we have the notoriety of being the killing city of animals at the S P C A and city pound.
It seems many residents in this city consider their so called pets as being "disposables."
Disgusting, revolting, and irresponsible.
