Dr. Max Blouw has decided its time for fresh thinking, and will not seek a third term as Vice President Research at the University of Northern B.C.

Blouw has  been at the helm of research at the University for a decade. He has been instrumental in having the University's  research funding  climb from annual research grants of $3 million to the current $18 million.

Dr. Blouw  joined UNBC in 1994 from St. Francis Xavier  University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia where he was a Biology Professor.

Last year, he was named the 2005 Science and Technology Champion of the Year from the BC Innovation Council.

Blouw thanks his colleagues at the University and contacts with Government Agencies and private corporations,  "This has been a job of a lifetime for me. "

His current term will end in June of 2007.    His replacement as Vice President Research  will take over July 1st.

Max besides being a great person has done the University proud over the years. I will miss my interactions with him on occasion when he came a calling.

Next to Dr. Jago I believe Max has done the most for promoting UNBC in Canada and getting the research grants to such a small University.
"Enough small town?" He came here from Antigonish NS. The population is in the 5,000 range .... the university is just a bit larger than UNBC and was founded in the mid 1800s .. The best undergrad university in Canada for 4 concecutive years accoridng to McLeans. Halifax is a couple of hours away.

From the development authority: "we help the community attract the best and brightest of both people and business"

Growth????? One can live a nice life in a small community with little growth.... Apparently they just got , or are just getting an A&W .... It's called sustainability.

Small town, eh?

:-)

Dr Blouw was a great great asset to the university. No offence to Don Cozzeto who may go on to do a wonderful job at UNBC, but Max would have been a nice choice to succeed Dr Jago as president.

I wonder if that could be the real reason he is leaving ??
Who knows; If it was a job of a lifetime you would think that he would continue working here.

On the other hand UNBC is at a crossroads and faces some tough times in the next 5/10 years. Maybe its time to bail out.
