This afternoon, City of Prince George respresentatives will officially  turn on the tap for the new Fish Trap Island Pump Station.

The station will provide residents ot the North Nechako  and Hart Highland areas with an improved water supply.

The project was started to address both supply and quality issues, says Tony Pirillo, Supervisor for Utility Plants and Electrical Operations.

Work began in 2004, and the project went only a couple of weeks past its intended completion date, says Pirillo.

With one pump running, 270 litres of water can be pumped per second, says Pirillo. When there’s demand, a second pump kicks in and 400 litres per second are pumped. He notes there is some loss due to friction.

“It’s got the potential to be one of the biggest in the world,” says Pirillo. There isn’t the need for it now, he adds, but the system could potentially utilize 4 pumps and put out 14,000 gallons of water a minute.

Hopefully this will solve the water complains of the past and nothing but clear sparkling water comes out of the faucets now.

I do have a minor question though. Will this now allow North Nechako Road to have fire hydrants installed?

Right on ! This sounds just like the Cameron St. bridge deal. We will build one of the biggest in the world, we don't need it right now, but it will have the capacity for six lanes in both directions, pedestrian lanes, bike lanes, emergency vehicle lanes, handicap lanes, visible minority lanes......

Why just get by, let's plan for Prince George to reach 1M people just like Vanny, even though it will never happen.
Let's create overscale, large, mega-projects that not only meet our needs, but surpass them to such a ridiculous level that we will never totally utilize what we have spent a lot of money for.

Besides, it's a lot easier to get favors from local contractors if you create huge projects that they can really cash in on. If they are only doing mediocre projects, nobody gets anything.

Hey, how is the new casino coming along ? Did they scatter enough cash to push it through, or did they cheap out and now it won't fly because somebody didn't make it onto payroll ?
