The Federal government has announced cuts totaling about $1 billion dollars.

Included in those cuts, $11.2 million dollars of unused funds for the Mountain Pine Beetle Initiative. Opinion 250 has placed a call to both Dick Harris and Jay Hill to get their comments as to why these funds were cut but have not heard back from them.

City of Prince George Mayor Colin Kinsley  is supposed to be in a conference all day today but says he may have to leave that conference to see how the City can access the money "There was no application form" says Kinsley who says  he and Dr. Charles Jago met with David Emerson and the Minister responsible for Infrastructure funding last spring.

He says they had asked the Federal Government for some of the beetle funding for the construction of the Northern Sports Centre ""We wanted the Federal Government  to show some small role, that  they meant business about mitigation and diversification for communities affected by the pine beetle infestation.  What better example of clean diversification than growing sport medicine, sport training, more professors, more research throughout the entire region?  The Northern Sports Centre sits perfectly well and if there is $11.2 million, we only need five of it."

Here is the balance of the cuts announced Monday:

  • End to visitor-rebate program that gave tax refunds to tourists: savings, $78.8 million
  • Law commission cuts $4.2 million
  • Smaller cabinet announced last February: $46.8 million
  • Administrative reductions to Status of Women: $5 million.
  • End to medical marijuana science funding: $4 million
  • Cuts to museums assistance: $4.6 million
  • `Efficiencies’ in Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.: $45 million
  • Removal of unused funds for mountain pine beetle initiative: $11.2 million
  • Elimination of Court Challenges Program: $5.6 million
  • Cancellation of National Defense radar project: $13.9 million
  • Consolidation of foreign missions: $4.5 million.

Need all the money they save for the Olympics....!
That adds up to about $224.1 million. Are the rest of the cuts $10 bucks here and there?
It is very expensive to go to war, especially if it is halfways around the globe form here.
That's sad,

I sure would hate to be in the forestry industry these days, as it feels like they are getting crapped on at every turn these days. I realize that my income is indirectly tied to the forest industry as are most people in PG, so when one suffers we all do. Why did they cut the beetle funding, and why did they sign such a horrible lumber agreement? Didn't the voters of BC overwhemingly vote Conservative this time around?

Once again, we are too far away from Ottawa for anyone to really care about us.

Shame on you Mr. Harper!
Like Abraham Lincoln said: " You can fool some of the people all of the time."

Kinsley wants the dough, eh? Itchy feet and his suitcase packed? Cynical, ain't I ?
Cry me a river. Its about time someone took the bull by the horns and started to cut some of these stupid programs. Everytime you turn around these days some politician is whining for more money. Kinsley would have you beleive that the money from Ottawa comes from some secret place, rather from your and my tax dollar. They whole idea of this SportPlex in moronic and a waste of taxpayers money, and still he wants more. Hopefully he will not run in the next election.

The lumber industry in Canada, and especially in British Columbia doesnt need to operate on my tax dollar. They make millions of dollars in profit every year, and will continue to do so for the forseable future. If they were not making big money they would have left a long time ago.

Its time for all you Liberal and NDP's to start putting YOUR money where your mouth is and stop living off Government handouts.
