Countdown To The Cup
By 250 News
In seven months, 5 Junior A hockey teams will be in Prince George, hoping to take home the Royal Bank Cup. The Prince George Spruce Kings have a shot at keeping that Cup right here because no matter how their season shapes up, they have a spot in the championship because they are the host team.
At a special luncheon today, Host Committee Co-Chair Dan Rogers said the event which starts May5th , 2007 and runs through to the 13th, is expected to contribute $1.5 million dollars to the local economy, and generate enough revenue to leave a legacy of about $30 thousand dollars.
Funding for the event comes from three levels:
- ticket sales, with the hopes of selling $425 thousand dollars worth
- Corporate sponsorship, they need $230 thousand and so far have collected $100,000
- fundraising events which will have to collect about $80 thousand.
With the event expected to bring more than 500 people to Prince George, Rogers says this is likely the biggest event Prince George has ever hosted. There is still a need for volunteers says Rogers, who says he would welcome a call from anyone interested in getting involved.
Tomorrow, the Countdown to the Cup will include an anniversary celebration for the Spruce Kings. They are planning a "Party on Patricia" with a tailgate party set to go at 5:30 at the Coliseum, followed by a special tribute to the original Spruce Kings Team before the game which has the Kings taking on Burnaby, the current RBC Cup Champions.
