Some thoughts to keep in mind if you are planning your Thanksgiving meal for later today, or to ponder if you are having some leftovers from a feast on the weekend.
According to the latest stats available , in 2005, Canadian poultry farms produced 155,000 metric tonnes of turkey. That was a 7.1% increase over the previous year.
Chances are you will feature some of the top Canadian grown vegetables with that Turkey.
The top seven are:
- potatoes
- sweet corn
- peas
- beans
- tomatoes
- carrots
- pumpkin
That number 7 veggie, the pumpkin is the fastest growing vegetable in Canada. In 2001, pumpkin crops were worth $22 million dollars, but thats small potatoes compared to the value of the spud crops in the same year, their value was $961 million.
