Downtown Trees

Late last week there was a story circulated suggesting trees downtown had to be replaced because they had been targets of vandalism.

Well that is only partly right.

Indeed there are trees that were damaged by vandals, while at the same time a large number of trees died as a result of a lack of water.

While we have been trying to get information from the City Parks dept. when asked to comment about what percentage of trees died from lack of moisture, an employee in the department turned the call over to the Manager and he has said he will call us back.

Basically we are told the problem came about when the water lines for irrigation to the effected trees did not have the water blown out of them last fall. This spring when the system was turned on, breaks developed in the lines and a percentage of the trees died from lack of water.  The summer was unusually dry so the trees couldn't even rely on the usual rainfall for moisture.

Each one of the trees that were planted on 3rd Ave cost just shy of $900 dollars.  The actual amount of loss due to the broken lines has not been made available at this point.

And probably the true figure will never be known, now that some other event can be blamed....

pull them all out and paint the concrete green...
Pine Valley needs a new irrigation system also. No trees and new trees has doubled the dry conditions there.

Sell Pine Valey and paint the concrete green.
I think a better question is, "Who forgot to drain the water lines, and why?"

I would also be interested in a breakdown of the $900 cost per tree. I know everything is expensive these days, but that seems a bit much.
I remember watching them install the water lines and thinking this would happen.

You would think the store owners would take ownership, but I guess if they are pawn shops the city can foot the bill....
