The Canada-BC Municipal, Rural Infrastructure Fund is now officially in place, but it remains to be seen if Prince |George can  get  a share of the dollars for two major propjects.

Although the Federal and Provincial  governments have each put $51 million  into the pot,  local governments are expected to match funding bringing the total amount to  $153 million.  Of that total,  80% of the pot (about $120 million) will be  dedicated for projects in communities with populations under 250 thousand, and at least 60% of that amount will be directed to "green" projects that  deal with things like drinking water supplies,  storm water and sewage treatment,  and public transit.

The remaining 40%  (or about $48 million) will be used to support  local roads, culture, tourism  and recreation projects in those  communities  under 250 thousand.

If the replacement of the Cameron Street bridge  is  considered ( full replacement option) then the Federal-Provincial  share would be $14 million while the expansion of the runway at  Prince George Airport would call for another $20 million.  Those who have applied for funding in the past  suggest it would be unusual for Prince George to be granted $34 million, or more than two thirds of the amount available for all  "smaller" communities.

Communities and not for profit organizations can make their applications for funding now through to the end  of January.

Aint it funny how a gazillion bucks kinda disappears while it is trickling down the line before it gets to the neediest. Of course "neediness" term is debatable. I'm all for a study about that. Whacha gonna pay me?
