Simon Fraser Bridge Twinning on Hold
By 250 News
The contract for the twinning of the Simon Fraser Bridge will not be awarded.
The rising costs and the demands of the strong economy were given as reasons for the decision.
The cost of the new bridge had been budgeted at $32.5 million dollars; the lowest bid from Peter Kiewit and Sons Ltd came in at $15 million above that figure.
The project is on hold until the Ministry of Transportation can take a closer look to see if there are any areas where project costs can be trimmed or some other means identified for building the bridge.
The Ministry says the twinning remains a priority and that it is a key element of the $200 million in construction projects announced last year as part of the Cariboo Connector plan that calls for a new wiegh scale south of Prince George, and four laning of several sections of Highway 97 betwen Prince George and Cache Creek.
