The number of visitors to the Prince George Tourism Centre  dropped 6% this year over last.

From May to September 2006, the Prince George Visitor Centres welcomed approximately 21,000 visitors. This same period in 2005 welcomed 22,500 visitors.  Still, the numbers aren't as bad as had been expected because of the  loss of the Queen of the North, the decrease in Via Rail frequency, high fuel costs,  and a strong Canadian dollar.

Most visitors were other British Columbians, next were U.S. citizens, and Europeans were third.

Although traffic into the Visitor centres may have been down, on the  up side, the two centres in Prince George scored very high on their Quality Service Reports.  Visitor Centres are  assessed by a Tourism B.C. "secret shopper".  The staff at  the Highway 16-97 Centre scored 91% ,while the downtown Visitor Centre scored 93%.

Plus...for awhile there, the word got around that you could'nt stay overnight at our local parking lots!
What a surprise, was it worth all the "saving the campgrounds" campaign? How much money was lost because of the tourist going elsewhere? Lets hope City Hall really thinks again about the way they govern.
I also recall that the figures, perhaps partly or mainly because of the boondocking debacle, were down considerably at the beginning of the season. So, we must have caught up a bit during the later summer.
Most tourists into this area are going to or coming from somewhere else and once they get a whiff of the Husky Oil Refinery, The Pulpmills, and other **High Smelling** industries Im sure that they cant get out of town fast enough. I for one do not see to many foreign license plates around the City, during the summer. Fact is, there is not much to see or do in Prince George
