It has been just a couple of weeks since a special report was presented to School District 57 on obesity and diabetes in school aged children. Now, UNBC will play a role in research on diabetes in children and the effects of environmental contaminants on health thanks to a donation from Husky Energy.
The company has contributed $100,000 to the University to purchase special equipment to be used to measure blood glucose levels, triglycerides, and so-called “good” (HDL) and “bad” (LDL) cholesterols. This equipment will help in the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.
Husky reps say the donation will mark not only the completion of their Clean Fuels Project, it will also mark the company’s 30th anniversary of operations in Prince George.

Husky has recently completed expansion and upgrades to its Prince George light oil refinery to produce low sulphur gasoline and diesel fuel. Since the completion of the upgrade, the refinery’s daily production rate has gone up from 10,000 barrels a day to 12,000 barrels a day.
