The Prince George Farmers’ Market has wrapped up another year, and researchers say they have further information to confirm the positive impact it has on the City of Prince George in general and the downtown in particular.

The researchers say on the day they attended to survey customers, (September 9th) there were about 1,938 people attending the market.

Three hundred people at the market agreed to take part in the survey. The survey responses support information gathered in previous years.

Those who attend say they spend a total of $794 thousand dollars a year at the farmers’ market. Most of the people surveyed had made the trip to downtown specifically to attend the market (84%).

More than half (54%) said they visit the market regularly, at least two or three times a month and 64% said they would also visit neighbouring businesses while downtown for the market. The researchers say the spin off economic impact for neighbouring businesses was just over $400 thousand dollars.

Nearly every survey that has been done on the revitalization of downtown has mentioned the positive impact the farmers’ market has on the area. Those studies have urged the City to incorporate some sort of farmers market in any revitalization plan.

This report will be incorporated into a larger study of the impact such markets have on 26 communities throughout B.C.

Great news - love the farmers market! Hope that even more stalls are opened and more Prince Georgians attend next year. This is a great way to support local enterprise and get good quality products. Coming from the Lower Mainland where you have the Westminster Quay and Granville Island, the PG farmers' market is well on its way to becoming one of my personal "must visit" areas. My out of town family also enjoyed the atmosphere, friendly sellers and local flavour.
I agree with anniemartin. I just wish there were more "farmers" there selling food produce such as is the case in Kamloops, where those selling other wares have their own area.
I suggest that the figure $800,000.00 is a little misleading. A large portion of this money was spent by consumers in other areas of the City before the Farmers Market, and would be if the market wasnt their.

Anything that I buy their I used to buy somewhere else. A large portion of this money is just being spent in a different area, and some local business is losing a few dollars.
True, Palopu, but that argument could be used for any business opening in PG (or anywhere else) that competes with an existing business. Certainly the food items sold would compete with the large grocery chains and take some sales away from them.

The other side of the coin is that local producers will almost certainly spend the vast majority of the money they get in PG, whereas the large grocery stores would send it out of PG. Overall it increases the economy of PG a little.
I agree ammonra. This why I spend my money there. Have a nice day.
Good news for a change keep it up.
