Hockey Moms

“Sooner or later if they want to play at a higher level, they have to go,” says Kathy Weber of Fraser Lake. That is the reality for a hockey mom from a small town. It just so happened Kathy followed her son and his two minor hockey teammates to Prince George.
“We packed our bags and rented a home in Prince,” says Weber.
“Its been trying I don’t deny that but it’s been worth it, the kids are having a great time, it’s been a great experience.”
Yes, the Fraser Lake connection is doing just fine. Sixteen year-old Kyle Weber, 15 year-old Nicolas Desousa and 15 year-old Damien Ketlo, are members of the Cariboo Cougars of the BC Major Midget Hockey League.
The fact the trio made the jump from Single A midget to major midget does not surprise Cariboo Cougars coach Grant Williams.
“I have been an advocate of this major midget league for 25 years,” says Williams, the reward for this league is the fact these kids from the outlying areas have been given the opportunity to play at a higher level.”
The Prince George based major midget hockey team includes players from a far south as One Hundred Mike House to as far north as Whitehorse.
Meantime back to the Fraser Lake hockey moms who praise the small minor hockey association that became so much part of their lives.
“Our boys benefited a huge amount growing up through Fraser Lake minor hockey, the amount of ice time, the great coaching,” says Kathy Weber.
Marna Desousa admitted it was not easy watching her son leave his hometown to pursue his hockey dreams. “It’s a big move, it effects the whole family,” says Desousa.
“Who knows where they will go with hockey,”says Weber, but we gave them the opportunity, the chance.”
