Slush Brings Out Sanders

First major snowfall of the season left roads at higher elevations slushy

"We have four  sand trucks on the road right now."  That's the word from the Streets Division of the City of Prince George.  The trucks are making sure there is  good traction on hills particularly at the higher elevations, like the Hart Highlands and College Heights.  The bowl area of Prince George is said to be in much better shape.

Sand truck operators are reporting they are seeing about 1" 1/2 to 2" of snow on the roads in the higher elevations, not enough to bring out the ploughs but enough to be  a concern for icing and traction difficulties.

There are 9 sand trucks in the City's fleet, only 4 were ready for the season, as this is early in the season for a snowfall like this.  "Usually we get  a first snowfall that is immediately followed by rain so there is no need to get the  trucks out" says one streets division employee.

The forecast seems to support that observation as  the area is supposed to get rain this evening and overnight with possibly some snow/rain tomorrow morning morning.

I counted 8 vehicles in the ditch today between PG and Vanderhoof. One accident I saw was a car and a truck pass each other going the opposite direction both going into a spin and ending up in opposite ditches. A red taurus did a few barrel rolls with a half twist into the trees completely written off. A gray newer Ford with a nice canopy that was in peices throughout the ditch doing multiple rolls, and the others just went of the road.

I was appalled at the highway to Fort St James. As of 6PM it was a foot deep in snow with groves from the bottem of the cars and down to nearly one lane with snow drifts throwing the trailer all over the road even though you could only do 50km an hour in a tri-drive. Any family driving that road with a 4 wheeler heavily risked their lives IMO.
Ahh winter is upon us and as usual no one is prepared.
Can hardly wait til next spring when I can start inhaling all that sand/dust/fine particle crap. Can't seem to win, eh? Oh, well.
All the vehicles in the ditch? I.C.B.C will pay for that. And I will pay I.C.B.C. It don't get much simpler than that.
