ALERT to DRIVERS

Police at 2.30 pm. Saturday advised the public to stay off the highways in this region after a rash of accidents put some people in hospital and  resulted in many others with their vehicles in the ditch.
Vanderhoof detachment reports that Highway 16 west of Vanderhoof has been closed to all traffic as a result of a foot of fresh snow. Power is out in some parts of Vanderhoof. No travel in and around that community is recommended.
In Mackenzie to the north 2-to 3 inches of fresh snow, with fresh snow still falling. Some parts of that community are  without power due to the heavy snow fall on power lines.
To the south, Highway 97 is slippery between Prince George and Quesnel, with fresh snow overnight and sleet and rain falling on the region at present. Through Quesnel and south, conditions seem  o.k.(click here for the Dragon Lake web cam)
McBride is receiving scattered rain and sleet showers, the roads have become slippery as a result and travel is not recommended.
A driver who came through the Pine Pass earlier today reported four transport trucks in the ditch, five pick up trucks and three cars.
Police have also been trying to keep up with a rash of roller overs in the region.

inches .... ?????

foot??????

whose foot???????
Is this a time warp or something .....???? who is the author of this ......??????
First off, I wrote it... Secondly...The RCMP officers who patrol the roads, don't use the metric system, they do it for a reason , the majority of the population still uses feet and inches. You may have been schooled in another system so use it, but don't try and portray those of us who choose to use feet and inches as some sort of uneducated, unwashed, know nothings.

Meisner
A little sensitive today Ben? Relax, I was schooled in feet & inches and I appreciate hearing news that means something to me. Time warp or not. Chester
Methinks thou dost protest to much
I was in the Fort again today on a trip up to our pit and I can say it had at least three feet of snow since last night. Waist high to be exact.

I talked to the YRB guy and he said that was nothing, and that they had it so deep North of the Fort it was coming over the top of their snow plows. The trees are bending from the weight onto the power lines all up and down the highway. Some power lines across the highway almost touch the truck. The highway before noon was down to one lane with a foot of snow in the only lane open.
"methinks" .... ???

"thou" ... ????

Now we are even returning many centuries. At least I now know whose foot to use. The king's foot!!
;-)
I, for one, appreciate being informed of the snowfall measurements in feet and inches.
I know how to convert, but it is a relief at times to not find it necessary to do so.
As we get older, is it possible we avoid taxing our minds?
Or does easy just become more appealing?
For those highly educated-it is your turn to convert into metric.
Have at it, but don't ridicule the other system. After all, it served us well for many years.
According to research, for older people, easy means that one has one foot in the grave, whether it is mental or physical easy. Exercise keeps open young.

It is not highly educated that have to convert, it is all those who are younger than 35 or so and went through the metric school system.

I speak more than one language and will think in the language I speak, not translate. Relating that to linear measurements, I would say that it is similar to looking at a depth of snow and referring to it as a foot when speaking to an American or an older Canuck, and 30 cm. when speakingt to a younger person. I do not convert one measure to the other, I convert the physical distance to the appropriate unit.

The thing I find strange is that we have not yet learned what many other countries do that used other systems some centuries ago and still have vetiges of the pre metric times. For instance, 500 grams is referred to as a pound in some European countries. The imperial pound is 454 grams. I think we should simply accept that a pound is 500 grams and and be done with it.

The vestiges of the Imperial system will be around for centuries unless we are considerably different from others in the world.
Jeepers, creepers, owl, looks like you and me ain't never goin' to get on the same page.
Looked up easy in my dictionary just to make sure I didn't miss nuthin'. and it don't mean atall, atall, what you said about them old folks with one foot headin' on the wrong side ov the grass, but guess that would have to be the physical side. Never said a dang thing about mental either!
I just never knew anyone could get so excited over a coupla' inches, or them cm's, of snow-which will be all gone in a coupla' days, God willin', and not be such a bother to the folks, both old, and young 'uns.
Just to let you in on my line of thinkin', obsolete tho' it be, I never did care much for that metric system them fellas in Ottawa forced on me.
I know you must do an awful lot of book learnin' to be so up on it all, but me, I take a little time out for just every day livin'.
Never mind, like I always said,
Takes all kinds to make up this world!
Yes...tell all of the 300,000,000 people in the U.S.A. that!
And all this because I made a tongue in cheek remark at the onset of the posts

I know it is difficult to pick up sarcasm on the net .... but I thought this one would be easy enough ... better not try a more obtuse ones ....

I think I have let it go long enough

better start using my "wink" a bit more often ....

;-)

-------------------

by the way, trusted, the reasearch I was talking about has nothing to do with looking up easy in the dictionary. I was talking about exercising one's mind keeps one young ... read the reference below as an example of such writing.

"Researchers say the mental decline many older people experience is because they aren't taxing their brains enough. The nerve cells in their brains are atrophying due to largely routine behavior."
Americans use metric roof shingles because they go onto the roof faster than imperial roof shingles.

(some of you may actually recall seeing those idiotic ads on Seattle TV stations some years ago)
Inches, feet, centimeters, meters,
you can pick your poison, but I have noticed that there are a lot of people out there who seem to think snow on the ground means lest see how fast we can go....
get a grip people......
the worst offender i have seen...
a male, late 20's, with big raised 4x4 truck, cell phone in one hand, coffee in the other, sunglasses on, his hat cocket to one side, and going like he was in the Indy 500. I be he thinks 4x4 means he can stop faster than everyone else.....wrong answer!
How fortunate many of us are that lefty is not running this country, or snow would be the least of our worries. We would likely be heading for the big ovens or firing squads utilized for extermination in the 40's
It is Sunday, and I shall "count my blessings" while discounting this imperial-metric topic and putting it to bed for the time being. As I am in a position whereby I use both systems, I shall not be inclined to prompt those with Lefty's intelligence to question mine.
I was simply joshing with owl, as he does come on as a rather pompous person, and if I were to look up all his references, I should be rather over taxing my time, let alone my brain.
So be it!
Hope the kids are having a bit of fun in the snow, as the adults certainly appear to be having difficulty coping with it-but in a rather idiotic manner.
On the off chance I will sound like an absolute moron, I would not mind the imperial system being used for future reporting of snowfall. I shall make an attempt to keep my brain busy on other issues.
Some of us never get too old to work and be productive, Lefty. Have a little respect.
Be of good cheer!
How delightfully humorous, a poster named "Go Faster" complaining about people who speed ;-)

From personal experience, Owl, avoid sarcasm it is invariably missed!

My pompous response to: "if I were to look up all his references, I should be rather over taxing my time, let alone my brain" ..

Always thinking of people like that by most often posting the key part of the link so that one does not have to click through, but including the link to show that what I am writing is true or supported by others.

It is an old habit of respecting the reader; provide the information so that a click through is not required, and provide the link for those who are interested in reading further.
Long story ammonra, but that is ok...
have i sped, yes!
but i do slow down when the snow hits.... unlike others I have seen...
just an observation....
hoping to have others pay a little more attention to their driving.... I too am trying my best....
have a good day all....
So be it Lefty.
Thankfully you are not in a position to exterminate the so called "old folks" you are so despicable of.
You really should be deeply ashamed of yourself.
Who is actually the moron-to make such a statement over the method used for measurement of a snowfall.
You are to be pitied!
Really, what's all the noise about ?
The only reason we switched from imperial to metric is because it made it easier to trade with other countries who use metric, and it is easier to calculate measurements with, over imperial.

There are purposes and points to both systems, so why don't we be really smart and use whatever works best at the time for the given situation.

I know how many litres of fuel I put in to my vehicle, but couldn't tell you how many gallons.
I can tell you I get 25 mpg but I don't have a clue how many kms I will go on 1L of fuel, or how it compares for fuel economy ?

So, go get a 2L bottle of pop, a 26 oz bottle of booze, a 454g bag of chips and a 16" pizza, buy a 1/4 oz of wonder weed and roll 2g of it into a joint and have yourself a great day while pondering our impetric system.

:-)
Hey Lefty, just be glad you don't have to deal with chains and rods and perches and stones like we did when I was a young 'un a school.
I recall stating I am quite capable of using both, so I should not line up to be beheaded -right? Or wrong?
I am definitely on side with thereasonableman. Being capable of using both methods must put me ahead of you Lefty-who is so limited to only one!!!! You would be lost in the U S A.
Judge not lest ye be judged---as shameful!
"but couldn't tell you how many gallons"

We must remember, also, that the imperial gallon is different from the US gallon. So, all of us who have a 60 gallon water heater, actually do not have a 60 gallon water heater....

;-)
